Dr. Heidi’s birth story…

Although the birth team had planned for a home birth in north Spokane, the Spokane fires forced a last minute evacuation and change of plans to birth at the Colville Women’s Center & Birth Place. Dr. Heidi stayed in Kettle Falls with family awaiting labor for almost a week when things finally got started!

Labor started slow and steady during the day, with a gradual transition to stronger active labor the next morning. She and the birth team got settled at the birth center and used a variety of position changes, spinning babies, massage, tub and shower for labor progression and comfort.

The strength of contractions continued to increase that evening and she entered the “transition” phase, which is just before pushing. Dr. Heidi requested her water be broken to speed things along at the end. The water was clear and baby was doing great. The team encouraged her to change positions and get out of the tub to help bring baby down where she would feel the urge to push.

A slow walk to the bathroom and a few contractions later, Dr. Heidi began pushing and baby was born! Baby Rachel was crying and healthy, also relieved to be in and out of the pelvis relatively quickly. After the intense labor & birth, Dr. Heidi was determined to get into bed, deliver the placenta, and get some rest with her new baby. Born at 41 weeks, baby Rachel weighed 7 #8 and 22” long.

A couple hours later, news had reached them that the evacuation level at her home had been reduced. Perfect timing for her family to go home in the morning! While she was fortunate that her home and belongings were not damaged by the fires, she requests prayers for the families who are left with little to nothing.

Dr. Heidi gives her sincerest gratitude to her midwife Dr. Mary & birth team at Colville Women’s Center & Birth Place for their wonderful care and support through the pregnancy and birth, and a job well done to the students who participated in her care as well.

Our midwife students and birth assistants gathered for neonatal resuscitation practice!
The best way to keep up these skills while serving a low-risk population is to practice using manikins and run through various scenarios.
Although it’s not the part of our jobs we look forward to, it is a necessary skill for providing labor & birth care outside of the hospital.
We are so proud of this team for their perseverance and dedication to our community. Our birth center could not operate without each of their contributions! 🤗
