Ask an Orthodontist: Can you whiten your teeth when you have braces?

Answer: It’s best to wait. Once braces and cement are removed from your teeth, and the gums have a few weeks to heal, a professional whitening treatment like ZoomTM can be used.

If you want to brighten your smile during treatment, follow these steps:
• Be sure to brush and floss regularly to prevent surface stains
• Limit food and drinks that can stain teeth, like coffee, tea and red w**e
• Keep up with routine cleanings with your dentist to keep your smile looking its best

Once your braces are removed and your teeth have had time to adjust, your orthodontist can let you know when you can resume teeth whitening for the best results.

Myths vs. facts: Clear braces

Myth: Clear (ceramic) braces don’t work as well as metal braces.
Fact: Clear braces correct the same orthodontic issues as traditional braces. However, metal braces may be a better choice for more complex cases.

Myth: Ceramic braces are invisible.
Fact: Ceramic brackets are tooth-colored and blend in with your teeth, but they’re still visible up close.

Myth: Clear braces stain easily.
Fact: The ceramic brackets themselves resist staining. The clear elastic ties and adhesive can discolor between adjustment appointments. But, because the elastics are replaced regularly, severe staining is rarely an issue.

Myth: Clear braces are just as strong as metal braces.
Fact: Ceramic is durable, but it is more likely to chip or crack than metal. Because of this, clear braces are better suited to adults and older teens.
