And if your child is using AAC, it is especially important that you model what you are saying on your child’s device. Use the CORE words predominantly and fewer nouns. That’s how adults talk. They learn from ‘listening’ to you ‘talk’. 👍 Thanks for the visual Omar!

A child’s ‘bad behavior’ is often a sign of an unmet need rather than a desire to misbehave.

Whether they’re acting out because they’re hungry, tired, overstimulated, or seeking connection, behavior is their way of communicating what they can’t yet put into words. Instead of focusing on the behavior itself, try to ask, ‘What does my child need right now?’

Meeting that need—whether it’s a snack, a nap, or a reassuring hug—can help resolve the behavior and bring calm. This approach teaches kids that their feelings matter and that there are healthier ways to express them.

By seeing ‘bad behavior’ as an opportunity to understand and support, you’re building trust and teaching emotional resilience.
