Breast cancer screening isn't one-size-fits-all. Your personal breast cancer risk can help guide what's right for you.

Your age, family health history and other breast cancer risk factors can all play a role in when to begin screening. For people at average risk, screening mammograms often start at age 40, but your doctor can help you decide what’s right for you based on your health history and personal risk. Safer communities start with simple steps that help protect our neighbors.

During , our team connected with local families through a hands-on safety effort. In collaboration with the Texas Medical Association’s Hard Hats for Little Heads campaign, colleagues handed out children’s helmets to help make safety resources more accessible for kids who bike, skate, scooter or ride on wheels.

According to the CDC, policies that encourage bicycle helmet use have been linked to a 20% to 55% reduction in bicycle-related head injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. That is why helping families access helmets is one way to support injury prevention close to home.

Opportunities like this help us support families beyond our hospital walls and contribute to a safer, healthier community.

highlights the important role collaboration plays in delivering coordinated care.

Karen Brock, Certified Nurse Midwife, says midwives work closely with nurses and physicians to create a cohesive care experience for patients.

“Our collaboration with nurses and physicians is an important part of how we care for our patients. That teamwork allows us to support women with more complex needs, including conditions such as diabetes, preeclampsia and gestational hypertension, while ensuring the appropriate members of the care team are involved,” Brock said.

For some patients, having a high-risk pregnancy does not mean midwifery care is off the table. Midwives can remain part of the care team while collaborating closely with physicians and other specialists as needed.

“Strong collaboration creates a cohesive flow of care. We also work closely with each patient to understand her needs, preferences and goals so that she feels heard, supported and included in her care,” Brock said.

That patient-centered approach can also include tools that support more freedom during labor. With wireless fetal monitoring, we can track uterine activity and your baby’s heart rate via Bluetooth — giving you the freedom to move around or use the restroom during labor, rather than staying confined to bed.

We’re proud to offer women and families access to Certified Nurse Midwives as part of our hospital care team, providing a collaborative, personalized approach to maternity care.

During , we’re proud to recognize the role midwives play in labor and delivery, women’s health and the overall well-being of families in our community. Midwives support women through pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum care, while also providing important women’s health services beyond maternity care.

Katherine Read, Certified Nurse Midwife, is part of the women’s health care team, providing OB/GYN-focused care across different stages of a woman’s life.

“Many people think of midwives only in connection with pregnancy and delivery, but our role goes far beyond that. As advanced practice nurses specializing in OB/GYN care, we provide services such as well-woman exams, Pap smears and other gynecologic care. We have the opportunity to build relationships with women and support their health through many different stages of life,” Read said.

Midwifery care also takes a whole-person approach, whether a patient is preparing for childbirth or seeking routine women’s health care.

“We take a holistic approach to care by looking at the whole person and trying to understand what may be contributing to a concern, rather than focusing only on the symptoms. When appropriate, we explore lifestyle, health history and other factors that may help us address the root cause before turning to medication,” Read said.

When you or a loved one needs emergency care, your closest option may be a freestanding emergency room (FSER).

An FSER provides 24/7 emergency care similar to a hospital emergency room, but it’s located separately from a hospital campus. Offering convenient access to emergency care, FSERs can help you get the care you need close to where you are. With more than 30 locations across the Greater Houston area, HCA Houston ER 24/7 provides adult and pediatric emergency care services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

The smallest patients can benefit from the biggest stories.

We recently participated in the international read-a-thon hosted by Babies With Books, an organization that supports reading to babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, reading together with infants and young children helps strengthen relationships with parents and caregivers, supports early brain development and builds attachment during crucial growth stages.

During the read-a-thon, our colleagues volunteered their time to read to babies in our NICU, helping create meaningful moments of comfort and connection through books.

We are grateful for every parent, caregiver and colleague who helped make reading part of the care experience. Every page shared is another way to comfort, connect and support a baby’s development. Learn more about our NICU services: https://bit.ly/4hw7W97

For many people with blood cancer or other serious blood disorders, a blood stem cell or bone marrow transplant can offer hope — and it often starts with a donor.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), most patients who need a transplant don’t have a fully matched donor in their family and rely on NMDP (formerly Be The Match) to help find one. NMDP ℠ is a global nonprofit leader in cell therapy that helps save the lives of patients with blood cancers and disorders.

As part of HCA Healthcare, we're proud to support this life-saving work through the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network — one of the nation's leading providers of unrelated bone marrow donor transplants in the U.S. Each year, this extensive network helps connect tens of thousands of patients with the care they need.

You could be someone’s match. Learn more and join the registry at https://bit.ly/4z5kBa5.

Confidence can start with something as simple as the right outfit.

Our team recently collected professional clothing items for Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that helps women work toward economic mobility through workplace attire, career development tools and a supportive network.

This effort reflects a bigger belief we share at HCA Healthcare: Supporting healthier communities goes beyond clinical care. Since 1998, the HCA Healthcare Foundation has provided more than $300 million to more than 14,000 community organizations through grants and gift matching.

Thank you to our colleagues who donated items and helped support a community partner making a meaningful difference. Learn more about how the HCA Healthcare Foundation is helping create healthier tomorrows: https://bit.ly/4rwUZ3t

When Annistyn was born at 22 weeks and 2 days, weighing just 415 grams, or 14.6 ounces, she was admitted to our Level IV NICU at The Woman's Hospital of Texas, where she would spend the next 260 days receiving specialized neonatal care.

Her mom, Kelsey, remembers the neonatal nurses who stood beside their family throughout that journey. “They were there for us on our most difficult days, and they never gave up on Annistyn,” she shared.

Today, Annistyn is starting PreK3 and Kelsey, inspired by the nurses who cared for her daughter, is in nursing school with hopes of becoming a NICU nurse herself.

This , Annistyn and Kelsey’s story is a meaningful reminder of the lasting impact NICU care can have on a family. Read more: https://bit.ly/4yndytC
