It is graduation season, which means many families are preparing to say goodbye as their child heads off to their next adventure. For some, it's the first child leaving home, for others, it may be the second, third, fourth - and each transition can bring its own challenges and emotions. This season can be difficult for parents, couples and families as they adjust to changing household dynamics and the mix of pride, excitement, sadness and uncertainty that often comes with these milestones.
Graduation can also be emotionally challenging for the students. They may be feeling sadness and grief due to losing the community and routines that they have known for so long, feeling anxious about what comes next, while also experiencing excitement about finally being an adult.
Feelings of grief during times of transition can be surprising and unexpected. Feeling both intense pride and deep sadness at the same time is completely normal! Major life transitions, even happy ones, can trigger emotional and physical stress responses, sometimes leading to heightened anxiety, sadness and discomfort.
Remember: you are not alone! We are here to support you as you navigate all of the emotions graduation season can bring.
