Healthy aging is about more than what we see in the mirror.
As a dermatologist, I spend a lot of time talking with patients about healthy skin, sun protection, skin cancer prevention, and the visible signs of aging.
But lately I’ve been thinking more about the other side of aging: healthspan—how many years we can maintain strength, cardiovascular fitness, metabolic health, and quality of life.
Today, my stepdaughter and I had metabolic testing done to look at things like VO₂ max and body composition. The goal wasn’t simply to find out a number or compare ourselves to anyone else. It was to better understand where we are now and what we can do to improve our health for the decades ahead.
It was fascinating, and honestly, a little humbling to see what the data actually showed.
It also reminded me that longevity isn’t one magic supplement, treatment, or procedure. It’s the accumulation of the basics: exercise, strength, nutrition, sleep, stress management, and taking care of ourselves consistently.
And yes, as a dermatologist, I care about helping my patients age well on the outside. But I’m increasingly interested in helping all of us think about aging well from the inside out, too.
I’m excited to take what I learned today and turn it into some tangible changes in my own routine. ❤️
