Doomscrolling is the habit of spending extended periods scrolling through negative or distressing online content, often moving from one upsetting story to the next. It is often distressing, and can be hard to recognize and put a stop to while it’s happening. Continued exposure then leaves us feeling emotionally depleted while providing little additional understanding or control over the events themselves.
Staying informed serves an important purpose. The challenge emerges when information consumption continues beyond the point of usefulness. Small boundaries around when and how we consume news can create some space between knowing what is going on, and becoming overwhelmed by it.
