The Fetal Institute The Fetal Institute is your go- to place for prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy.

The Fetal Institute provides patients with the latest and most advanced resources in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Fetal Therapy. Fundamental to the philosophy of the Institute, all diagnostic and therapeutic options are performed using either a non-invasive or a minimally invasive approach, which results in better pregnancy outcomes. The Fetal Institute was founded by Dr. Ruben Quintero and Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos, who have a long history of successfully treating babies in need of in-utero intervention. The Fetal Institute serves as a resource to all Obstetricians and Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists. The Fetal Institute is a National and International referral center for the assessment and management of complicated pregnancies. Dr Ruben Quintero is a world-known fetal surgeon, who has pioneered several life- saving fetal surgical techniques. Amongst others, he proposed the Quintero Staging system for the classification of twin twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and he pioneered the selective laser surgery for the treatment of TTTS. Dr. Kontopoulos has performed hundreds of life-saving fetal surgeries, including the first fetoscopic removal of an oral teratoma and fetal bronchoscopy. Both Dr. Quintero and Dr. Kontopoulos are known for their compassionate care and respect for their patients.

What happens when open spina bifida is diagnosed before birth?

For families, the diagnosis can bring a lot of questions about what it means for their baby and what treatment options may be available.

In this video, Dr. Eftichia Kontopoulos explains open spina bifida, how it can affect a developing baby, and why fetal treatment may be considered in carefully selected cases.

Advances in fetal medicine have made it possible to repair open spina bifida before birth, including minimally invasive fetoscopic approaches designed to support both fetal and maternal care.

Hear directly from Dr. Kontopoulos about the diagnosis and the role fetal treatment may play.

LUTO: What Families Need to Know

What is LUTO?

LUTO stands for Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction, a condition in which a blockage prevents a baby from emptying the bladder before birth.

This can affect the bladder, kidneys, and the amount of amniotic fluid needed for healthy lung development.

In this video, Dr. Ruben Quintero explains what LUTO is, how it affects a developing baby, and how fetal therapy may help in carefully selected cases. Watch to learn more.

How did Dr. Ruben Quintero's journey in fetal medicine begin?

Years ago, no tools or techniques existed to treat conditions inside the womb. Dr. Quintero took it upon himself to change that.

Over many years, he developed new surgical instruments, techniques, and disease classifications. His work has given hope to countless families who otherwise would not have had a successful pregnancy.

It all started during his fellowship at Yale University. A discovery during a routine procedure changed everything. With the guidance of his mentors, he took it further - learning not just to see inside the womb, but to treat what he found there.

That leap from diagnosis to treatment laid the foundation for fetal therapy as we know it today.

Get to know the doctor behind the discoveries. 🎥

đź’™ Happy Father's Day to every dad who holds a hand, and believes in hope before the first breath is even taken.

A father's role in this journey is often quiet but never small, present at every scan, every appointment, every late night of worry and wonder. At The Fetal Institute, we see that strength, and we honor it.

To all the fathers and fathers-to-be in our Fetal Institute family, today, we celebrate you. đź’™
