One important thing I always remind my patients is that certain lesions, like a blue nevus, can sometimes resemble other pigmented skin conditions, which is why proper dermatologic evaluation matters.

A blue nevus is usually a benign collection of pigment-producing cells located deeper in the skin, giving it that characteristic blue-gray appearance.

But distinguishing it from other lesions is essential for the right diagnosis and peace of mind.

This week, I’m continuing my work serving rural and Indigenous communities across Southeast Alaska through Indigenous Dermatology. 🤍

In these regions, some of the most common conditions I’m seeing include:
❄️ severe dry skin
❄️ eczema / atopic dermatitis
❄️ skin infections
❄️ skin cancer concerns

Extreme weather conditions, harsh climates, and limited access to specialists can make these conditions much harder to diagnose and manage.

Many patients in remote communities must travel long distances by boat or plane just to access healthcare services, which is why outreach and teledermatology continue to be such an important part of my mission.

Healthcare access should not depend on geography.
