Black Maternal Mental Health Week 🌱
"Rooted in Justice and Joy" ✨️

As a psychotherapist, mother of four, and Black woman, this week is deeply personal.

I specialize in infant and early childhood mental health, while also supporting individuals, couples, and families. Across these spaces, I see how a mother’s mental health shapes her child’s emotional world. Those earliest bonds matter.

So many Black mothers carry a quiet weight, expected to be strong even when we need care, softness, and support too. As a mother of four, I also know the added layer of judgment, the assumptions, the pressure, and the constant feeling of being watched or evaluated.

We also face real disparities, being underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and navigating systems not built with us in mind.

Healing takes a village. Fathers and partners matter too.

Joy is allowing ourselves softness and connection.

Justice is advocating for care, access, and systems that truly support Black mothers.

This week is about honoring our stories, normalizing support, and breaking generational cycles.

And remembering… I am human. 👏🏽

Thank you to my four children, my village, and my support system for holding me, growing with me, and reminding me that I do not have to do this alone. 💛 and neither do you 💚

She Grew Into Her Purpose 💞

Scrolling through this baby picture trend and I can’t help but smile 😃

This little one had no idea she would grow up to sit with big feelings, hold space for healing, and help both little hearts and grown ones find their way.

And on International Women’s Day, I’m especially grateful for the women who nurtured, guided, and inspired the woman I became.

May we continue to uplift, heal, and support one another. 💫

Women’s History Month honors not only women’s achievements, but the invisible emotional and caregiving labor carried for generations, often without recognition or support.

Historically, postpartum mental health was misunderstood or minimized, framed as weakness instead of a natural response to biological, emotional, and social stressors.

From an infant and early childhood mental health lens, we know this truth: the well-being of babies is inseparable from the well-being of their caregivers.

Supporting women during pregnancy and postpartum supports attachment, regulation, and healthy brain development. Maternal mental health is not separate from infant mental health. It is foundational.

Honoring women’s history means continuing to advocate for postpartum care, relationship-based support, and systems that value caregiving rather than expecting women to carry it alone.

When we support women, we shape the emotional health of the next generation.

Children need guidance that supports regulation, not fear. When we lead with "don’ts", the brain 🧠 often hears threat, shame, or danger. That can trigger fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown.

When we tell children what to do instead, we offer clarity, predictability, and safety.

Their nervous system can settle, their brain can stay online, and learning can actually happen.

➡️ Guidance builds regulation.

➡️ Regulation builds connection.

↩️

And connection is what changes behavior over time.
