Most people don’t need to get stronger to improve their sled times.

They need to get better at using the strength they already have.

We’re going deep on sled push + sled pull technique this Saturday at Versa North Liberty, including one of the biggest mistakes I see on the rope pull: not trusting the rope.

I’ve raced HYROX Pro in 69:09, and I’ll break down the techniques that actually matter when the sled gets heavy and you’re trying to move fast without wasting energy.

A disc herniation does not mean you need to stop CrossFit, give up deadlifts, avoid squats, or replace every WOD with walking and stretching. It also does not mean your spine is permanently damaged because an MRI showed a “herniation.”

You may need to modify your training for a period of time. You may need to reduce load, volume, range of motion, or certain movements while your symptoms calm down. But that is different from being told you can never train normally again.

The objective is to gradually rebuild your capacity for the exact demands of CrossFit. Start with what you can tolerate, monitor how your symptoms respond, then progressively increase the load, volume, speed, and complexity.

Because the goal isn’t to have a pain-free MRI.

The goal is to get you back to heavy deadlifts, squats, Olympic lifts, gymnastics, running, and hard conditioning without constantly worrying that you’re going to “blow your back out.”

Your back is not made of glass. Train it accordingly.

This is actually true.

And a lot of PTs are going to hate this one. If you’re attempting a near-maximal squat, clean, deadlift, or sn**ch, expecting your technique to look exactly like it does at 60% is unrealistic. Small technical breakdowns are normal when you’re approaching your limits.

Your bar path might get slightly less efficient. Your torso might shift. Your tempo might change. You might have to grind through the final rep. That doesn’t automatically mean you’re “moving wrong,” “compensating,” or putting yourself at risk of injury.

The goal of training isn’t to make every rep look identical. The goal is to progressively expose your body to demands it hasn’t fully adapted to yet. There’s a massive difference between a small, expected deviation under heavy load and a complete loss of control that you repeatedly force yourself through.

If your PT tells you that any deviation from textbook form means you’re using too much weight, I’d seriously question whether they understand strength training. Near-maximal attempts are supposed to be hard. If your form never changes when the weight gets heavy, you probably aren’t testing your limits.

I’ll be leading the warm-up and cool-down at CrossFit 2.2 on September 5.

I’ll also be teaching you how to keep training when something doesn’t feel right, how to know when you can push, and how to recognize when it’s time to pull back.

You don’t need to choose between ignoring an issue and completely stopping training. The goal is learning how to adjust your training while still making progress.

Come train, learn, and leave with a better understanding of how to manage your body while training hard.

September 5 at CrossFit 2.2.
