Do you need a referral to see a physical therapist in New York? In most cases, no. New York’s Direct Access law allows eligible physical therapists to evaluate and treat patients without a physician referral, so you can often start physical therapy without first seeing your doctor or waiting for a prescription. This makes it easier to address pain, injuries, mobility issues, and sports-related conditions sooner. Treatment without a referral is limited to 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first, while patients with Medicare, workers’ compensation, or no-fault coverage may still need a prescription before starting physical therapy.

October is National Physical Therapy Month — and it's a good time to clear up what PT actually does. It's not just post-surgery recovery.

Physical therapy can help you:

- Manage pain — hands-on treatment and targeted exercise to address the source, not just the symptom
- Recover after surgery or injury — rebuild strength, range of motion, and confidence in how your body moves
- Avoid re-injury — correct the movement patterns and imbalances that caused the problem in the first place
- Move better as you age — improve balance, stability, and strength to stay independent and reduce fall risk
- Get back to your sport — sport-specific training that returns you to the field, court, or course prepared

For over 40 years, Island Sports Physical Therapy has been helping Long Islanders move better and live stronger.

Fall is a great time to get outside and enjoy the trails, but uneven terrain, steep inclines, and long hikes can put extra stress on your knees and ankles. Wearing supportive footwear, warming up before your hike, staying aware of your footing, and gradually increasing your activity can help reduce your risk of injury. If you experience persistent pain, swelling, stiffness, or instability during or after a hike, don’t ignore it. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we can help identify the source of your discomfort and create a personalized treatment plan to help you stay active and enjoy the season with confidence.

Feeling unsteady on your feet can make simple everyday activities feel less comfortable and can affect your confidence when walking, climbing stairs, or moving around your home. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we provide personalized care to help patients improve balance, mobility, strength, and confidence so they can move more safely throughout their day. Dizziness and balance problems may appear as lightheadedness, unsteadiness, difficulty maintaining balance, or an increased risk of falls. These symptoms can have many possible causes, including inner ear conditions, changes in blood pressure, neurological conditions, or decreased strength and mobility. If dizziness or balance issues are affecting your daily routine, addressing them early can help you feel more secure and confident in your movement.

Lower leg pain is common among runners, athletes, and active individuals, but not all pain is the same. Shin splints and stress fractures can have similar symptoms, making it important to understand the differences and know when to seek evaluation.

* Shin splints are often related to overuse, increased activity, or sudden changes in training.
* Stress fractures are small cracks in the bone that may require more significant rest and treatment.
* Both can cause pain, tenderness, and discomfort that worsens with activity.
* Pain that is focused in one specific area, persists with rest, or continues to worsen may be a sign of a stress fracture and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
* Risk factors can include repetitive impact, sudden increases in training, improper footwear, and muscle imbalances.
* Early evaluation can help identify the cause of your pain and determine the right approach for a safe recovery.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we help athletes and active individuals understand the source of their pain and develop personalized treatment plans to safely return to the activities they enjoy. Don’t ignore lower leg pain—getting the right care early can make a difference.

Ever experience a painful "knot" in your muscles that just won't go away? Muscle knots can develop from overuse, poor posture, stress, repetitive movements, or prolonged periods of sitting, often leading to symptoms such as tenderness, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and persistent discomfort. While stretching or massage may provide temporary relief, ongoing muscle tension is often a sign that there may be underlying movement patterns or muscle imbalances that need to be addressed. Physical therapy can help improve mobility, restore strength, and identify contributing factors to help reduce the likelihood of recurring pain. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we're dedicated to helping patients relieve discomfort, move more comfortably, and get back to the daily activities they enjoy.

Is Your Commute Causing Neck or Back Pain?

Long hours in the car can take a toll on your body. If you’re experiencing discomfort during or after your commute, these factors may be contributing:

* Long periods behind the wheel can place added stress on the neck, back, and surrounding muscles.
* Poor posture, inadequate lumbar support, and improper seat positioning can contribute to stiffness and muscle tension.
* Common symptoms include neck pain, lower back pain, headaches, reduced flexibility, and discomfort that worsens after driving.
* Long commutes, sedentary lifestyles, and previous injuries may increase your risk of developing ongoing pain.
* Physical therapy can help improve strength, mobility, posture, and movement patterns to address the underlying causes of pain and reduce future flare-ups.

Your daily commute shouldn’t leave you feeling stiff and uncomfortable. At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we provide personalized treatment plans to help reduce pain, restore mobility, and get you back to your daily routine with greater comfort and confidence.

Tendonitis can make everyday movements and favorite activities uncomfortable, but understanding what’s causing the pain is an important first step toward recovery. While rest can help calm symptoms, lasting improvement often involves addressing the factors that are putting stress on the tendon.

* Tendonitis occurs when a tendon becomes irritated or inflamed, often due to repetitive movements, overuse, or poor movement mechanics.
* Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, swelling, stiffness, and discomfort that worsens during activity.
* Risk factors can include repetitive job tasks, sports participation, muscle imbalances, and age-related changes in the tendons.
* While rest may temporarily reduce symptoms, long-term recovery often requires addressing the underlying cause of the problem.
* Physical therapy can help improve strength, mobility, and movement patterns to reduce stress on the affected tendon and help prevent future flare-ups.

At Island Sports Physical Therapy, we help Long Islanders recover from tendon pain with personalized treatment plans designed to restore function and get them back to the activities they enjoy most.
