I love working with plants. Even on a crisp and windy Fall day you might find me drying herbs, creating a pelvic stem blend, talking to the trees, mixing up a fresh tincture, and always sipping on herbal tea. It's a deep love of mine and a way of being, but sometimes being in connection with plants can be frustrating. Invasive species take their toll and it's not the same joyful connection I feel with plants that I work with as medicine.
Recently, I decided to create a new relationship with the English Ivy attempting to smother the trees in my yard. I promised to work with it in a constructive way as I simultaneously remove it from the land (a project that will likely encompass a lifetime.) So, I spent the afternoon collecting leaves, cleaning them, and simmering them down into a dark soapy liquid form. While they don't have massive amounts of saponins, they do have some. You can see the water froth in the video. I was pleasantly surprised by the refreshing almost warm and spicy smell that arose from the plant. I'll be using this liquid for my laundry this week. So far, it seems to be doing the job. And, I am deeply grateful to see this plant as a resource versus a neverending opponent.
Get outside and connect with the plants around you. They have many lessons to teach and gifts to give!
