Access is more than an invitation. 🌿

What does access really mean if someone is welcomed into a program, but the supports they need to participate aren’t available?

At Willow Tree, we believe access means more than being present. It means having opportunities to participate, contribute, build relationships, and truly belong.

Every week, we see what happens when children and teens of different abilities learn, explore, and grow together.

And something beautiful happens: everyone benefits.

Children discover different ways of communicating, learning, and participating. Sometimes, a visual guide created to support one child becomes a resource that others enjoy using, too. What began as an individualized adaptation becomes a tool for the whole group.

That’s meaningful inclusion. Not simply making room for someone, but creating an environment where everyone can learn from one another.

But inclusion requires more than good intentions.

Some individuals need one-on-one assistance, adapted activities, communication supports, or additional flexibility. These aren’t reasons for exclusion. They’re opportunities to find solutions.

And those solutions require resources.

Today, Willow Tree Occupational Therapy provides much of the expertise, staffing, and support that make these experiences possible. But this cannot sustainably meet the growing need alone.

Through The Willow Tree Community Organization, we’re working to build a future where inclusive enrichment, supported work, and meaningful community participation are accessible to more people.

We have the vision. We’re doing the work. Now we need financial partners to help make it sustainable.

We’re seeking individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners who believe that access should mean more than being welcome.

It should mean having the support and opportunity to truly belong.

Families like this deserve to be in our churches. They need the Church—and the Church needs them.

As the body of Christ, may we be intentional about creating spaces where children and adults with disabilities and their families are not simply welcomed through the doors, but truly supported in belonging. Sometimes that means flexibility, understanding, extra hands, or doing things a little differently so they can succeed.

Jesus made room for people others might have overlooked. May our churches be places where every family knows there is room for them, too.

I made a very big decision yesterday at 4:45 pm. And I’ve come to learn in my 43 years that most big decisions come after deciding to be brave.

I was attending mass with two of my four children. My daughter and my 13 year old.

The congregation was singing 10,000 Reasons and there was a hum of babies crying, toddlers babbling, and joyful voices.

I looked around at all the people worshipping.

I saw a little bit of everyone. Older. Younger. Families. Singles. Loud. Quiet. Social.

I saw a man with Down syndrome whom I met a while back at a picnic. He’s in his 40’s.

My son Sawyer practically ran to him to say hi at the end of mass.

I saw a young woman with autism who is like my own son but different. And wonderful in every way.

She was worshipping loudly. It was pretty great.

And in that exact moment I decided that I’m going to start bringing not only my autistic son back to church, but our whole family.

I let every reason why it won’t work and be way too hard flood my brain.

People will be mean to us.
He will be too loud.
I’ll have to leave and walk the halls with him. And I’ll feel isolated. Which I try to avoid.
People will stare.
He will run on the alter and lie down and roll around.

I could go on and on.

There are always 10,000 reasons why it won’t work with autism. This I know.

But I’m done hiding and being scared.

It’s time.

He deserves to be there. Our family deserves to be there.

And the only way he will learn is by trying.

I’ve also never felt closer to God than when I’m caregiving for my son. That means something.

So, I have a request.

Please be kind when you see a family like mine.

Please know that a mom or dad like me has agonized over the decision to be there. And wrestled with the why and how and they just want their family to be included and know Jesus.

And know that they are trying. Always trying their best to make it work.

We start next week.

I’m nervous. But this matters. And it’s time.

🍂 FRIDAYS IN THE FIELD REGISTRATION IS OPEN! 🍂

We are so excited to officially open registration for Fridays in the Field — Willow Tree’s new learning cooperative!

Fridays in the Field is a nature-based learning cooperative designed to give homeschool families a place to learn, explore, create, connect, and grow together through meaningful, hands-on experiences at Willow Tree.

🌿 Ages 4 through high school — learning experiences will be adapted and grouped as appropriate for different ages and abilities, while still creating opportunities for our younger and older learners to work, learn, and contribute alongside one another.

🌿 Fridays | 9:00–12:30
🍎 October 16 & 30 + November 6 & 20
🌲 Monthly and bi-weekly participation options are available.

Families who previously completed our interest form will also receive an email with registration information and additional details.

Well… I thought I was taking a video. 😂

The plan was for me to thank everyone from behind the camera, Emilie to add her own thank you, and Lissy to help us draw our Jamboree raffle winners.

Instead, I apparently took two very cute photos of Emilie and Lissy while we all thought we were making a video. 🤦‍♀️ So these photos will have to document the moment!

Thankfully, the raffle drawing still happened, and all of our winners have already been contacted.

🌿 WILLOW TREE JAMBOREE PARKING GUIDE!

We’re getting close to Jamboree! 🎶🌻 Here’s a quick look at where to park when you arrive.

🚗 Limited parking is available on the Willow Tree property — please follow the marked areas and do not park in the driveway/areas marked in red.

🚶‍♀️ Additional parking is available at the Old Morrison Memorial School at 386 Main St. It’s just about a 3-minute walk to Willow Tree!

💛 Carpooling is encouraged to help us make the most of our limited parking.

📚 New addition! Campfire Stories at the Jamboree!

🎃Gather around our cozy pretend campfire for a story and a little outdoor rest! Our hay bale seating is generously provided by Country Pumpkins, and books will be available throughout the event for families to enjoy.

🔥And while it looks like a crackling fire, there’s no heat here. Our “flames” are actually made from beautiful celosia flowers!
