What I did when my spouse did not think they needed a sleep study.

Sometimes the person sleeping next to you notices the warning signs before you do.

Dr. Suzanne Thai’s husband didn’t believe he needed a sleep study, even though his snoring was extremely loud. So she recorded him while he slept. When he watched the video and saw himself stop breathing and struggle to take another breath, he finally decided to get tested. His sleep study showed moderate-to-severe sleep apnea.

Loud snoring combined with witnessed pauses in breathing can be a warning sign of obstructive sleep apnea. A recording can’t diagnose sleep apnea, but what happens while you sleep may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Choosing a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance When You Have TMJ, Jaw Pain or Headaches

Not every sleep apnea oral appliance is designed the same way, and the right choice can depend on more than just your sleep apnea.

If you have jaw pain, TMJ-related problems, or headaches, your sleep dentist may consider those symptoms when selecting and customizing an oral appliance. Different appliance designs allow different types and amounts of jaw movement, and certain features or modifications may be considered based on your individual needs. That’s why a thorough examination is an important part of oral appliance therapy. The same device isn’t necessarily right for every patient.

You Can Combine CPAP With Other Sleep Apnea Treatments

Can you combine CPAP with other sleep apnea treatments? For some people with obstructive sleep apnea, using more than one therapy may be an option when a single treatment isn’t providing the desired results or is difficult to tolerate.

Dr. Suzanne Thai explains how CPAP may sometimes be used with oral appliance therapy. In appropriate patients, an oral appliance can help improve the airway during sleep, while CPAP provides positive airway pressure. This combination may also allow some patients to use lower CPAP pressures. Other treatment combinations may be considered depending on the patient, including therapies such as Inspire or Zepbound.

Sleep apnea treatment should be individualized based on your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment response, and medical needs.

CPAP is a Great Treatment Option Especially for Severe Sleep Apnea Patients

CPAP can be a great treatment option for sleep apnea, especially for people with severe obstructive sleep apnea who can use it consistently.

Dr. Suzanne Thai explains that some of the patients she sees doing particularly well with CPAP have severe sleep apnea. For these patients, successful treatment can sometimes make such a noticeable difference in how they feel that the mask, straps and hose become less important to them. Someone with milder sleep apnea may not notice the same dramatic change and may find CPAP more cumbersome.

The key is finding an effective sleep apnea treatment that a patient can successfully use.

Sometimes a Home Sleep Study can show a false negative.

Still having sleep apnea symptoms even though your home sleep test came back negative? A negative result does not always rule out sleep apnea.

Home sleep apnea tests can sometimes produce false-negative results. If symptoms or other concerns remain, such as ongoing fatigue or certain cardiovascular conditions, further evaluation may be appropriate. An in-lab sleep study, called polysomnography, collects more detailed information during sleep and may help identify sleep apnea that was not detected by a home test.

Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why the test result is only part of the picture and why persistent symptoms should not be ignored.

4 Things That Should Happen With Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Therapy

Getting an oral appliance for sleep apnea is only the beginning. How do you know your treatment is actually doing what it should?

Dr. Suzanne Thai explains four important things that should happen with sleep apnea oral appliance therapy. Your appliance should reduce or eliminate sleep apnea-related breathing problems and improve symptoms, be comfortable enough to wear consistently, and be regularly checked and adjusted as needed. Most importantly, treatment effectiveness should be objectively evaluated rather than relying on how you feel alone.

Not Getting the Results You Want After Your Sleep Apnea Treatment. You Could Have Sleep Apnea and Another Health Issue.

Still tired even though you’re treating your sleep apnea? Sleep apnea may not be the only thing affecting your sleep.

Even when sleep apnea treatment is optimized, another condition can sometimes contribute to fragmented sleep or daytime tiredness. Periodic limb movements, chronic pain, insomnia, and other sleep or health problems may interfere with getting the restful sleep you need. Dr. Suzanne Thai explains why persistent symptoms are worth discussing with your doctor instead of assuming your sleep apnea treatment simply isn’t working.

Are You a Sleep Apnea Monster?

Are you waking up cranky, moody, or more irritable than usual? Poor sleep could be part of the problem.

Sleep apnea can repeatedly interrupt breathing during sleep, causing brief awakenings that fragment your sleep throughout the night. Even if you don’t remember waking up, those interruptions can keep you from getting the restorative sleep your body needs. The result? You may wake up exhausted, snap at your spouse or kids, and carry that irritability into your workday. You may not be a “sleep apnea monster” you may simply need better sleep.

If this sounds familiar, consider talking with a healthcare professional about whether a sleep study is appropriate.

Here’s How Sleep Apnea Can Affect the Health of Your Teeth

Waking up with a dry mouth could mean more than just feeling thirsty. Sleep apnea can be associated with snoring and mouth breathing during sleep, which can contribute to dry mouth. That matters because saliva plays an important role in protecting your teeth. It helps neutralize acids, wash away food and debris, and provide minerals that support tooth enamel. When your mouth is repeatedly dry and saliva’s protective effects are reduced, your risk for tooth decay and other oral health problems may increase.
