It’s menopause AND mammogram Monday for me. Because of my breast density I elect to undergo breast cancer screening every 6 months alternating a mammogram with a supplemental screening ultrasound or MRI. Supplemental imaging for breast density is a tough topic for both patients and doctors because there are no clear guidelines as of right now. Here is what we know and how I personally approach this for myself and my patients in the absence of a clear algorithm:

☀️approximately 50% of women have dense breasts (Category C or D on mammography)
☀️dense tissue can make certain types of abnormalities in the breast harder to detect, which is why there is a role for supplemental screening with either breast MRI or US
☀️supplemental imaging does not take the place of your annual mammogram because there are certain cancers that present with findings that are specific to mammograms. Also density can change with time and as breasts become less dense it may be possible to stop your supplemental imaging.
☀️in the absence of clear guidelines I recommend supplemental imaging to all of my patients with Category D breast tissue. regardless of their lifetime breast cancer risk.
☀️for those with Category C density we calculate their lifetime risk and then through shared decision making determine if and how they would like to proceed.

It is now federally required that all mammogram reports require it to be noted if breasts are dense or not and many locations have been doing so already. Supplemental screening, however, is not often covered by insurance. I hope in the not so distant future we will get more clear guidelines and insurance coverage will follow, but for now we have to make do with what we can as both patients and docs.

It’s been far too long since I’ve posted but for good reason, y’all are keeping me busy and I couldn’t be more honored to care for so many patients both new and existing! To allow for me to spend as much time as possible focused on patient care, Helia has expanded with the hiring of a practice manager, Megan Surrett. She is the tech savvy yin to my technophobe yang 😅 and I am so thankful to have her take Helia from a one woman show to a team effort!

Megan brings a wealth of experience from her background in pharmacy. For the last five years, she has been a dedicated stay-at-home mom, focusing on her family. Megan is excited to embark on this new journey with Helia Health, where her expertise and dedication will help enhance our practice and patient care. I am delighted to have her on board and look forward to the positive impact she will make for our patient experience. Welcome Megan!
