We are excited to welcome Dr. Jejelowo as she begins her rotation with My DOC. During her time with us, she will have the opportunity to work alongside our team, care for our patients, and gain valuable experience serving uninsured and underinsured mothers in the Coastal Bend.

August is National Breastfeeding Month!

This month, we celebrate the many mothers who are nourishing their babies through breastfeeding and recognize the importance of providing education, encouragement, and support throughout their journey.

Breastfeeding offers many benefits for both baby and mom, but every family's experience is unique. Whether you're preparing to breastfeed, currently nursing, pumping, or simply learning about your options, remember—you don't have to do it alone.

We're also excited to share that our community partner, Materna Prenatal and Lactation Services, is celebrating World Breastfeeding Week with educational resources and events! Be sure to visit their page to learn more and join in the celebration.

Why do pregnancy cravings happen?

While there isn't one definitive answer, pregnancy cravings are thought to be influenced by a combination of hormonal changes, heightened senses of taste and smell, emotional factors, and your body's changing nutritional needs.

Whether you're craving something sweet, salty, sour, or savory, you're certainly not alone! Every pregnancy is different, and cravings can vary from person to person.

A few tips:
-Enjoy your favorite foods in moderation.
-Aim for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
-Stay hydrated, as dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for hunger.
-If you find yourself craving non-food items like dirt, chalk, clay, or ice, let your healthcare provider know. This may be a sign of a condition called pica, which can be associated with nutrient deficiencies and should be evaluated.

Remember, nourishing yourself means nourishing your growing baby, too!

My DOC is seeking a volunteer bookkeeper to help support our nonprofit mission by assisting with bookkeeping tasks for approximately 4–10 hours per month. Your time and expertise will play an important role in helping us continue providing free prenatal care to uninsured and underinsured mothers throughout the Coastal Bend.

This is a wonderful opportunity to use your skills to make a meaningful impact in the lives of local families while supporting a growing nonprofit dedicated to maternal health.

As we spend time in New Orleans, we’re reminded that communities across the Gulf Coast continue to face significant maternal health challenges. In Louisiana, only about 71% of women begin prenatal care in the first trimester, and nearly 1 in 5 pregnancies receive inadequate prenatal care. Louisiana also continues to experience one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the nation. (March of Dimes)

Behind every statistic is a mother with hopes, fears, and a baby who deserves the healthiest possible start.

At My DOC (My Direct Obstetric Care Nonprofit Clinic), we believe quality prenatal care should never depend on a patient’s ability to pay. Our mission has always been to provide compassionate, evidence-based care to uninsured and underserved pregnant women—because early prenatal care saves lives, prevents complications, and gives babies the best chance to thrive.

While our work began in Corpus Christi, our vision is much larger.

We dream of a future where the My DOC model can be shared with communities facing similar needs, including places like New Orleans and beyond. By partnering with local physicians, volunteers, hospitals, and community organizations, we hope to help build sustainable programs that ensure no pregnant woman has to choose between her health and her finances.

One of the best parts of attending the California DPC Summit was building meaningful connections with organizations that share our passion for improving patient care.

We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with Dr. Kourosh Beroukhim and Dr. Benjamin Farahnik, founders of Telecurb MD , whose innovative platform helps physicians connect with specialists and expand access to the care their patients need. It's encouraging to see leaders from across the country express support for My DOC's mission of providing compassionate prenatal care to uninsured and underinsured mothers here in the Coastal Bend.

It was also especially meaningful to see members of the Middle Eastern community supporting one another in healthcare. Our Executive Director, Dr. Esther Khatibi, values the opportunity to connect with fellow physicians and innovators who share not only a commitment to improving patient care, but also a shared cultural heritage. These relationships remind us that collaboration knows no borders, and together, we can make an even greater impact for the patients and families we serve.
