For the longest time, I felt like rejecting my culture would help me belong. That if I distanced myself from the things that made me feel different, I wouldn’t feel so othered.
What I didn’t realize was that I was becoming so disembodied from myself that it was showing up in the way others perceived me.
When I finally decided, “No. Enough.”
I want to act on these things I have always done.
I grew up participating in Indigenous culture. I grew up whispering to plants to help them grow. I grew up having empathy for trees, watching things pass by with little explanation, and understanding that not everything needed to be spoken aloud to be felt.
I grew up leaving gifts for the ocean. I grew up telling her my secrets.
I grew up learning how to be still with nature, because that was my natural state.
So when I decided to step into this role, carrying all of the knowledge I had silently accumulated throughout my life, it felt effortless.
It felt as natural as breathing.
As if, no matter what I had done or how far I had wandered, I would always find my way back here.
My practice is a lifetime of knowledge, built through experience, observation, intuition, and actual practice.
For a long time, I struggled to feel confident in my work because I thought what I lacked was lineage. I thought I needed someone to tell me that I belonged here.
But intuition has connected me to my lineage in ways I never could have imagined.
I am learning that lineage isn’t always something we can trace on paper. Sometimes it lives in our hands. In our instincts. In the way we understand the natural world without ever being taught how. It lives in our bones, as a memory engrained to be read when needed.
Maybe my way isn’t your way, but it is a way that works for me. A way that brought me closer to myself, nature, god and culture. A way that helped to heal me and others. That is enough.
I feel so blessed to hold this space within our community, and even more blessed to be able to do this work.
To return to something that was always a part of me. To remember. To reclaim. To come home.
