Senior Skin: Fragile By Nature, Protected By Plan

Today is National Senior Citizens Day. Aging skin is thinner, drier, and easier to injure, and skin tears are among the most common preventable wounds in older adults (LeBlanc et al., 2018). Add swelling or poor circulation and a small tear can become a chronic wound (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016). Prevention is a plan: moisturize, protect, pad the sharp corners, and get any wound that stalls in front of a specialist. PAM Health Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers are honored to care for the generation that built everything around us.

PAD And PVD: The Circulation Behind The Wound

A wound that will not heal is a circulation question.

A lower leg wound that stalls for weeks is asking a circulation question. Peripheral artery disease affects an estimated 8.5 million American adults, and many do not know they have it (Gerhard-Herman et al., 2017). Leg pain with walking, cold feet, and slow-healing sores are the tells. When circulation is the problem, wound care and vascular care have to move together, and that coordination is what saves limbs (Conte et al., 2019). Our centers screen, coordinate, and heal.

Cellulitis: When Red Means Go 🛑🚦

Cellulitis in a senior is never just a skin problem.

Cellulitis sends about 650,000 Americans to the hospital every year, and the biggest risk factors are swelling, prior episodes, and breaks in the skin (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016). Most cases respond to treatment. The one that cannot wait is the one with pain out of proportion, rapid spread, or fever, because necrotizing infection kills up to 30 percent of the patients it touches (Stevens & Bryant, 2017). Know the difference. Act on the difference. Our wound centers manage the swelling and skin breakdown that keep cellulitis coming back.

Crush Injuries and HBOT
When tissue is starving, pressure feeds it.

Trailer hitches, mower decks, dropped engine blocks. Crush injuries starve tissue of oxygen from the inside, and that is exactly the physiology hyperbaric oxygen addresses. In a randomized controlled trial, 94 percent of crush injury patients treated with HBOT achieved complete healing versus 59 percent without it (Bouachour et al., 1996). Crush injury is a UHMS-approved indication (Moon, 2019), and timing matters. Refer early.

Every sting leaves a door open.

🐜🐝🪲Fire ant swarms, wasp stings, chiggers, and ticks. August is their month. Every sting and every attachment site is a break in the barrier, and skin infections follow those breaks (Stevens et al., 2014). For most people that means a sore spot for a week. For people with diabetes or poor circulation, it can mean cellulitis and a wound that will not close. If a sting or bite site is spreading, draining, or warm to the touch, let a wound specialist look at it.

The bite is Not the problem. The scratch is.

Summer bug bites are usually just an itchy annoyance. But every bite is a break in the skin barrier, and every scratch widens it. Mosquitoes cause most insect bites worldwide, and scratching them open is a known route to secondary infection (StatPearls, 2026). That is how a bite becomes cellulitis, which drives an estimated 14.5 million United States cases a year and hits the lower legs hardest (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016). A bite reaction builds over hours. Cellulitis builds over days. If the redness is spreading on day three, that is not healing. PAM Health Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers evaluate bite wounds early, before a small bite becomes a big problem.

🌟BITE Week! 🦈➡️ 🦟

Small Bites Can Become Big Problems

😎The Dog Days are the hottest stretch of summer and the season of stingers, standing water, and tailgates. Mosquitoes account for most insect bites worldwide, and scratching a bite open is a recognized route to secondary bacterial infection (StatPearls, 2026). That is how an itchy annoyance becomes cellulitis, which drives roughly 650,000 United States hospital admissions a year (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016). Crush injuries from trailers, mowers, and yard equipment are an approved indication for hyperbaric oxygen, where a randomized trial showed markedly higher complete healing with HBOT (Bouachour et al., 1996).

⚠️Recognize Redness ⚠️
Spreading past the bite, fever, drainage, or pain out of proportion is escalation, not healing. Bite reactions build over hours; cellulitis builds over days.
