**STUDENT SPOTLIGHT x2**

Today we have a dynamic duo of a student spotlight!

Two of our Students are a Grandfather/Granddaughter team, Papa Brian and his granddaughter Emma!!!

This is what Emma has to say about growing up with her Papa and her journey into medicine!!!

Welcome to the EMS family!!!

“Medicine has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in our family’s assisted living home, I was always playing doctor with my Papa—although I think he would probably describe those little doctor “playdates” as torture. He was my first patient, my first injection, my first blood pressure, etc. What was probably horrifying for him was probably what built the foundation for the career I’m building today.

As I got older, that interest and playdates turned into a career. I became a medical assistant and continued school with the goal of eventually becoming a trauma physician. Nearing the end of my pre-reqs for medical school, I need more clinical experience. So when I learned CAAS was offering EMT classes just blocks from my childhood home and my current home, I knew I wanted to do it—and somehow convinced Papa to take the class with me. (Papa is a nurse so I’m happy he said yes I thought he would say no) Thankfully for him I’m a-lot more experienced now than I was 15 years ago😂 I’m hoping this experience I gain in EMS will give me valuable hands-on knowledge and help prepare me for my future career as a doctor, all while helping people and saving lives.

I love it here in this little world of EMS and I know papa does too. I hope one day I can make an impact on our community as greatly as my instructors and the paramedics and EMTs that I have met during my ride alongs. Someday, when I’m looking back at my time at CAAS and how my journey in EMS began, I’ll always be grateful that I got to start it right here at home and with my Papa. ❤️🚑

Our EMT-B students were able to get some hands-on experience with Extrication Training yesterday! We conducted a joint training day with The City of Owosso Fire Department so that our students would be able to see and feel what it is like during a vehicle extrication. Students took turns between being patients and crew members. This helps them to gain the knowledge and experience for when it comes to Motor Vehicle Accidents. This also gave them the patient’s perspective when it comes to the sounds and movements of a vehicle as Fire works to cut the vehicle apart to get the patient out and to safety.

Our EMT students are continuing their journey through trauma assessment, different types of injuries, and the appropriate care for each one. This weekend, the focus was on one of the most critical skills an EMT can perform in an emergency: bleeding control.
Students worked through the proper steps for controlling severe bleeding and practiced the use of:
🩹 Bandaging techniques
🩸 Wound packing
💪 Direct pressure
🩹 Pressure dressings
🚑 Tourniquet application
But learning these skills isn't just about reading a textbook or watching a demonstration. Our students got hands-on and put their skills to the test!
To better understand what it takes to properly apply a tourniquet, students practiced applying them to themselves and to their classmates. This gave them valuable experience with proper placement, application, and technique while also allowing them to experience what a patient may feel during the process.
And yes… tourniquets can hurt. A LOT. 😬
Understanding that discomfort firsthand helps our students better prepare for the conversations they may have with patients during a real emergency. When someone's life may depend on stopping severe bleeding, students will be able to confidently explain that while the tourniquet may be painful, its purpose is to save a life.

Student Spotlight

This week's Student Spotlight is: Kezzie Dietz

"Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to work in the medical field because I've always loved helping people. I feel like I naturally gravitate toward careers where I can show compassion and be there for others, especially on their hardest days.
When I'm not busy with school or work, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and friends. My ultimate goal is to become a paramedic, and just continue to help others through continuing my education."

Please join us in supporting our Local Firefighters during the 1st Annual Firefighter Games! These brave men and women show up during one of the worst days of your life, risking their own lives in the process. This event is open to the public to showcase Firefighters skills and knowledge!

This week's Student Spotlight is Rachel Ferguson:

"I’ve always wanted to be in the medical field but never knew exactly what to be. Until last year when I had two people come up to me and ask me to do a ride along with them to see if I’d enjoy EMS. I fell in deep love with being on the road in an ambulance. It’s now my passion to become an EMT. My ultimate goal is to become a paramedic!"

This week's Student Spotlight is Maliki Anderson:

"I've always wanted to be in a career where I can help people when they need it most. That's what inspired me to pursue EMS. Being there for someone during one of the hardest moments of their life and knowing I can make a difference for both them and their family is what motivates me. Every call is an opportunity to provide care, comfort, and support. Although I love the idea of working in EMS, my long-term goal is to become a licensed therapist so I can continue helping people improve their lives in a different way."
