Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve gets irritated or compressed. This nerve runs from your lower back, through your hips and glutes, and down each leg. When something presses on it, you can feel pain that travels along that entire path. The good news? Most cases improve without surgery. Movement, stretching, strengthening, and improving posture can make a huge difference. In fact, staying active is usually better than complete rest.
