One of the most important parts of what we do is communication—especially with our patients.

That’s why we’ve recently added 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐬 to every ambulance. Each bag includes sensory items and fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, and writing tablets to help us better communicate and create a more comfortable environment for patients with autism, neurodivergence, sensory sensitivities, or communication challenges.

Medical emergencies can already feel overwhelming. Add lights, sirens, unfamiliar people, and chaos—and it can become even more difficult.

We want our patients and families to know this: we will always do our best to meet people where they are, find a way to communicate, and make even the hardest moments feel a little less scary.

𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧

Brandon started in EMS in 2021 at the age of 48—and if there’s one thing his path proves, it’s that there’s 𝘯𝘰 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 that leads to EMS.

Before joining the field, Brandon spent more than 20 years helping others in a different way. From working as a holistic health practitioner, massage therapist, acupuncturist, and herbalist to teaching martial arts and serving as an instructor and clinic supervisor at multiple colleges across Colorado and California- caring for people has always been part of his story.

So… how did he end up in EMS?

After joining Blue River Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter, Brandon was exposed to EMS and quickly found himself drawn in.
“Initially, I didn’t think EMS was something I would want to do, but over time it really started to interest me. The science behind the equipment and protocols caught my attention.”

One of Brandon’s most meaningful moments in EMS came when he responded to a patient he had cared for a year earlier following a serious motorcycle accident. At the time, Brandon applied a tourniquet to control life-threatening bleeding. A year later, that same patient recognized him and told him he had saved his life.
“𝘐𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦’𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘺.”

When he’s not at work, Brandon is at home with his wife and daughter working around their small farmstead—complete with chickens, ducks, a rabbit, cats, and 3 large dogs. He also keeps busy cutting firewood year-round, gardening, cooking at home, and enjoying backyard bonfires. Before EMS, he grew up mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, and competing in national and international full-contact martial arts tournaments.

He was drawn to HCH EMS based on a recommendation from a fellow provider at Blue River Fire Department—and the things that still keep him here: strong company values, in-house training, the rural work environment, and the family culture.

We’re glad you found your way to EMS, Brandon—and even more glad you found your way to HCH EMS. 👏

Bringing Healthcare to Your Doorstep: Introducing Our Mobile Integrated Health Program 🏠🚑

We are thrilled to announce a new way we’re caring for our community! Harrison County Hospital is officially launching our Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program.
We believe that high-quality care shouldn't be confined to a clinic or hospital ward. Our MIH team of specialized healthcare professionals is hitting the road to bridge the gap between traditional healthcare and your home. By partnering closely with local EMS, primary care physicians, and community first responders, we provide a vital link for patients who need extra support—whether they are recovering from an illness, managing a chronic condition, or have been referred to us by emergency personnel in the field.

🌟 What This Means for You

Our program focuses on personalized, in-home care to help you stay healthy, safe, and independent. We specialize in:

• Clinical Follow-Ups: Whether you’ve recently visited your doctor or were assisted by EMS, we provide the necessary follow-up care to ensure your recovery remains on track.
• Diabetes Management: We provide hands-on education and monitoring to help you master your glucose levels and feel confident in your daily routine.
• Home Safety Evaluations: Our team identifies potential hazards in your living space to help with fall reduction, ensuring your home remains a safe haven.
• Chronic Disease Support: We work alongside your existing healthcare providers to manage long-term health goals from the comfort of your living room.

🤝 Our Goal: Your Independence

By bringing clinical expertise directly to you, we aim to empower our patients, prevent complications before they start, and improve the overall quality of life for our neighbors.

"This program allows us to meet patients where they are most comfortable. By bridging the gap between standard medical care and the home, we ensure every patient has the support they need to thrive in their own environment." — Jacob Metcalf, Mobile Integrated Healthcare Clinician.

Keep an eye out for our team in the community! If you or a loved one is interested in learning more about how our MIH program can support your health journey, please visit www.hchin.org/mih or talk to your doctor or emergency responder about a referral.

After countless hours of class, clinicals, ride time, studying, early mornings, long nights, and showing up even when they were exhausted… our paramedic students have officially crossed one of the biggest finish lines in the journey.

Becoming a paramedic isn’t easy—and 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦.

It means balancing work, family, life, and exhaustion while learning how to make critical decisions in some of the hardest moments people will ever experience.
It means missed time, sacrifices, long shifts followed by longer nights of studying, and pushing through even when quitting would’ve been easier.

Over the last two years, these students completed hundreds of classroom hours, countless clinical and ride time experiences, and put in the work to build the knowledge, confidence, and skill it takes to care for people on their worst days.

The finish line is finally in sight.
One last step remains: National Registry.

We couldn’t be prouder of how far they’ve come—and we can’t wait to see the incredible paramedics they’re about to become. 👏

Reset doesn’t always look productive.

Sometimes it’s the gym.
Sometimes it’s getting outside.
Sometimes it’s doing absolutely nothing.

We asked our crews what helps them disconnect after a shift 👇
