What Is Keratoconus? My Cousin's Scleral Lens & Cross-Linking Journey

Keratoconus is an eye condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape, causing blurry, distorted vision that glasses and standard contacts can't correct. It's typically treated with scleral lenses (to restore clear vision) and corneal cross-linking (to stop it from progressing).

In this video, Dr. Ariel Chen follows her cousin Dixon's full treatment journey for keratoconus, from his first eye exam in the US to a corneal cross-linking procedure at Harvard Eye and his recovery weeks later back in Taiwan.

Topics covered:
✔ What causes keratoconus
✔ How scleral lenses restore vision
✔ What happens during a cross-linking procedure
✔ Real recovery results, 12 hours to 1 month post-treatment

Think you might have keratoconus?

Let's practice the BDPQ Worksheet, a vision therapy exercise that strengthens directionality, the ability to recognize the correct orientation of letters and numbers! This activity helps prevent common letter reversals like mixing up B's and D's, building confidence in reading and writing.

• Reinforces correct letter orientation (B, D, P, Q)
• Builds visual discrimination skills
• Strengthens phonetic sound association with letter direction
• Supports reading and writing confidence
• Great for home practice between therapy sessions

Patient-centered care should include patient-centered flexibility.

When patients ask whether they can follow up with their other eye doctor, the answer should be based on convenience, quality, and continuity of care, not unnecessary rigidity. Giving patients that option can make recovery more manageable while preserving strong communication between providers.

Flexibility does not weaken care when the system is built well. It strengthens access.

How do you handle follow-up when local care is the better fit?

Watch the whole conversation with opthalmologist, Dr. Omar Krad , on our YouTube channel. Link in bio.
