We had such a great time celebrating our 10 year anniversary! We recognized one of our very first employees, Office & Billing Manager, Ali, who has been so dedicated to working with us over the last 10 years. And we couldn’t have done it without the support of all our amazing employees past and present, family and friends. It has been a pleasure and an honor to be your choice for physical therapy treatment through your recovery journey. Looking forward to another 10+ years serving our Costa Mesa community and excited about the future of Costa Mesa Physical Therapy.

💪🏼MUSCLE MONDAY💪🏼
:
Did you know there are about 650-840 muscles in the human body depending how they are grouped/named?! :
The muscular system is made up of those 650-840 muscles that are different sizes and shapes depending on their function. Muscles are strong, elastic tissues that reinforce the skeletal system and provide movement as they are attached to the bones by tendons. :
Every Monday we’re going to highlight a different muscle with some basic information for you. First up is...
:
ABDUCTOR DIGITI MINIMI (FOOT)
- Action: abduct the 5th digit aka move the pinky toe away from the body, it also helps flex or curl the toe under - Origin: both sides of the bottom of the heel and the plantar aponeurosis which is the thick connective tissue supporting the arch of the foot - Insertion: lateral base of proximal phalanx aka outside of the pinky toe - Nerve: lateral plantar nerve (S1-3)
- Artery: lateral plantar artery :
Due to it’s location on the foot it can often be injured during physical activity or play a role in plantar fasciitis due to its origin. :
Hope you learned a little something. Stay tuned each week as we make our way through the human muscular system! :

💪🏼 MUSCLE MONDAY 💪🏼
::
ABDUCTOR DIGITI MINIMI (HAND) *Did you know there is an “abductor digiti minimi” in both the hand and the foot?! We did the foot 👣 last week and this week we will touch on the hand ✋. ::
Action: flex the metacarpophalangeal joint (knuckle) or in other words allows you to grasp tightly; it extends or straightens both the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints which are the 2 farthest knuckles; finally, it’s namesake, it abducts the 5th digit aka pulls the pinky or little finger away from the other fingers. ::
Origin: pisiform bone (a small bone in the hand). ::
Insertion: base of the 5th proximal phalanx on the ulnar side or in simpler terms at the knuckle on the outside of the pinky. ::
Nerve: deep branch of the ulnar nerve (C8-T1). ::
Artery: ulnar artery ::
Pain due to abductor digiti minimi of the hand involvement is usually felt on the outside of the hand up the little finger. Risk factors include repetition such as typing at work playing a musical instrument including but not limited to guitar, piano, violin. ::
Random Facts: this muscle can be used as a donor to restore function of the thumb should function be lost due to trauma or other means. It is also 1 of 3 muscles that makes up the hypothenar eminence or the pad of your hand under the pinky finger. ::
Come back next Monday for the next muscle!! We’ll be here!
