With back-to-school on the horizon, it’s a good idea to start helping your kids transition back to their school schedules. Start early, be consistent, and give your kids at least 2 weeks before school starts so they (& you) have enough time to adjust. Here are some tips:

☀️ Adjust wake-up times in the morning by 10-15 minutes earlier every few days. This helps kids’ bodies adjust more gradually & more naturally.

🌙 Shift bedtime 10-15 minutes earlier every few nights as well. Combined with waking up earlier, they should be tired sooner.

📖 Re-establish bedtime routines. Bath time, book time, or quiet time before bed helps create a relaxing and predictable routine to signal to your child’s body that it’s time to sleep.

📱 Limit screen time. Turn off TV, phones, and tablets at least 1 hour before bedtime. Blue light emitted from devices can interfere with sleep.

🛌 Optimize your child’s sleep environment. Dark, quiet, and cool bedrooms lead to more restful sleep.

Meningococcal infections are serious illnesses caused by bacteria. While not very common, these infections can cause healthy teens and young kids to quickly get very sick, including infections of the lining around the brain and spinal cord (bacterial meningitis) and sepsis (a bloodstream infection).

Most people get infected at home or in crowded shared spaces like day care centers, schools, and college campuses.

The vaccine against meningococcal infections is one of the AAP recommended childhood immunizations. Teens should get their first dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) at age 11 or 12 and another booster at age 16.

It’s summertime, and bumps, breaks and falls are bound to happen with kids! Knowing the difference between a minor injury and a serious one can prevent delays in care and ensure the right treatment. Swipe for examples of when to see your pediatrician or when to go to the ER.

Bottom line, emergency care is needed for potentially serious or life-threatening injuries, such as a bone that is visibly bent or a head injury with vomiting, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Less severe injuries can be evaluated for same-day care from your pediatrician or a pediatric urgent care and are less expensive.
