What can you do with cremated remains? Cremated remains may be buried in a cemetery or placed in a niche to provide a permanent memorialization for family and friends to gather and pay tribute to the deceased.

Cremated remains may also be scattered, kept at home in an urn, divided among loved ones in keepsake-sized mementos, or placed inside cremation jewelry.

Maintaining a positive outlook during the grieving process can be extremely difficult, but grief experts agree that focusing on small, positive activities during the day can make a big difference. For example, preparing a nourishing meal or taking a walk in a beautiful location can enhance our mood.

Positive activities beget positivity, and our outlook will begin to brighten as we continue to deal with the loss of our loved one.

In addition, choosing a mantra to repeat can help our thoughts move in a positive direction. Examples include:

- I allow myself to grieve with an open and light heart.
- I honor my sadness without letting it define me.
- Moments of peace, gratitude, and even joy are welcome here.
- I do not betray my grief when I smile, laugh, or feel hope.
- My heart is strong enough to hold both sorrow and light.
- Today, I choose softness, compassion, and grace for myself.
- I carry my grief with gentleness and my love with gratitude.
- I honor what I have lost while remaining open to the light that still surrounds me.

It’s a common misconception that choosing cremation means choosing not to hold a service. On the contrary, when planning for cremation, don’t skip the service.

A full funeral service may be held prior to cremation with the body present in a casket. A memorial service or celebration of life may also be held prior to or after cremation.

Services channel broad community support, allowing friends and neighbors the opportunity to pay their respects to the deceased and to the family.

“I doubt that many of those who set foot on that journey really understood what they were getting into or that they looked forward to the daily effort it eventually required. But they did know it was going to be hard and that there was a possibility they or someone they loved would not finish the journey. And yet they came. By the tens of thousands they came. And we—the Church, the nation, and even the world—are richer because they came.”

Here are a few top tips for traveling with cremated remains, commonly referred to as “ashes,” via commercial airline:

- Cremated remains should be stored in a non-metallic urn so that they can be X-rayed by airline security.

- Place the urn in your carry-on bag rather than in checked luggage. Don’t trust the airline with something so important!

- Carry the cremation permit with you. This document will get you through TSA security. You will be provided with this important document by the funeral home when the cremated remains are released to you.

- If you are transporting the urn to another country, have the funeral home check into the requirements of that country. The funeral home will then provide you with any further documentation that may be required.
