😴🌙 **Bedtime Battles After Summer? You’re Not Alone!**

Late summer nights, vacations and relaxed schedules can make getting back into a school-night routine tough for kids—and parents!

Here are a few ways to help bedtime get back on track:

⏰ **Keep bedtime consistent.**
Try to keep bedtime and wake-up time about the same each day, including weekends when possible.

📱 **Turn screens off before bed.**
Give phones, tablets, TVs and video games a break before bedtime to help your child wind down.

🛁 **Create a calming routine.**
Bath, pajamas, brushing teeth and reading a book can help signal that it’s time for sleep.

🥤 **Skip late caffeine and sugary drinks.**
Watch for caffeine in sodas, tea, energy drinks and even some chocolate.

🌙 **Make the bedroom sleep-friendly.**
Keep it cool, quiet and dark.

☀️ **Get moving during the day.**
Regular activity and time outdoors can help children sleep better at night.

❤️ **Be patient and consistent.**
It may take a little time for your child’s body clock to adjust after summer.

Good sleep helps children with **mood, attention, learning and overall health**—so getting that bedtime routine back is worth it!

👶💛 **September is Baby Safety Month!**

Little ones grow and change so quickly—and sometimes they can get into things before we realize they’re able to!

This month is a great time for parents and caregivers to do a quick **baby safety check** around the home:

🚗 **Car Seat Safety**
Make sure your baby's car seat is installed correctly and appropriate for their age, height, and weight.

😴 **Safe Sleep**
Place babies on their backs for every sleep on a firm, flat sleep surface with no pillows, blankets, bumpers, or stuffed animals in the sleep space.

🍓 **Choking Prevention**
Keep small objects out of reach and prepare foods in age-appropriate sizes and textures.

🏠 **Baby-Proofing**
Secure furniture, cover electrical outlets, lock away medications and cleaning products, and use safety gates where needed.

🛁 **Water Safety**
Never leave a baby unattended around water—not even for a moment.

A few simple safety checks can make a BIG difference. 💛

🤧 **“Why Is My Child ALWAYS Sick Since School Started?”**

If it feels like your child gets over one cold just in time to catch another—you’re definitely not alone!

🏫 **School means more exposure.**
Children are around more classmates, shared supplies, toys, desks, and other commonly touched surfaces.

🦠 **There are LOTS of viruses.**
Colds, stomach bugs and other viral illnesses spread easily among children, especially during the school year.

🛡️ **Their immune system is still learning.**
Younger children are still building immunity to many common viruses, so frequent illnesses can happen—especially during their first years of daycare or school.

🧼 **What can parents do?**
• Encourage frequent handwashing
• Teach children to cover coughs and sneezes
• Avoid sharing cups and utensils
• Keep up healthy sleep and eating routines
• Keep recommended vaccinations up to date
• Keep children home when they’re sick

❤️ Most of the time, frequent minor illnesses are part of being around other children. But if your child seems unusually sick, isn't recovering as expected, or you're concerned about their symptoms, give us a call.

🩺💙 **FRIDAY PEDIATRIC MYTH OR FACT?**

🤧 **“Green mucus means my child needs an antibiotic.”**

❌ **MYTH!**

Yellow or green mucus does **not automatically mean your child has a bacterial infection or needs an antibiotic.**

Mucus can change color as your child’s immune system responds to a cold or other viral infection. Since antibiotics treat **bacterial infections—not viruses**—they aren't always the answer.

💡 **When should you call the pediatrician?**

Give us a call if your child’s symptoms are getting worse, lasting longer than expected, or you’re concerned about how they’re feeling. We can help determine whether your child needs to be seen.

💙 When in doubt, give us a call. We’re here for your family!

💙 **PONTCHARTRAIN PEDIATRICS — PARENT TIP OF THE WEEK** 💙

🏫 **When can my child go back to school after being sick?**

It can be hard to know when your child is ready to return! A good rule of thumb is to make sure your child:

🌡️ Has been **fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine**

🤢 Has had **no vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours**

🥤 Is able to eat and drink normally

😊 Has enough energy to comfortably participate in a normal school day

💊 If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness, return-to-school recommendations may be different.

When you're unsure, give us a call. We're happy to help you decide what's best for your child. 💙
