Menopause Care: Why It's in the Spotlight—and How Egan Wellness & Med Spa Provides Evidence-Based Support
Menopause has become one of the most talked-about topics in women's health. Long considered an inevitable stage women simply had to "push through," menopause is now recognized as a significant quality-of-life issue deserving individualized medical care. Increased patient advocacy, social media, and updated interpretation of decades of research have encouraged more women to seek relief from symptoms that affect sleep, mood, cognition, sexual health, bone health, and overall well-being.
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe menopause care should be personalized, evidence-based, and focused on improving quality of life while carefully considering safety and each woman's health history and goals.
Understanding Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)
Current menopause care differs significantly from approaches used decades ago. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), published in 2002, evaluated oral, synthetic, hormone therapy primarily for cardiovascular disease prevention in older women, most of whom were in their 60s and 70s—not recently menopausal women seeking symptom relief. Those findings led many patients and clinicians to avoid hormone therapy, even though the study population differed from the women most commonly treated today.
Modern menopause management is individualized rather than intended to restore hormone levels to those of younger women.
Today's Preferred Treatment Options
Current clinical practice often favors transdermal 17β-estradiol (skin patches, gels, or sprays) because it bypasses first-pass liver metabolism and may carry a lower risk of blood clots than oral estrogen. All women generally require progesterone to protect the uterine lining, build bone density, and help with mood and sleep. Micronized progesterone is commonly prescribed due to its favorable safety profile.
Benefits Beyond Hot Flashes
Menopausal hormone therapy can effectively improve:
• Hot flashes and night sweats
• Sleep disturbances
• Mood changes and "brain fog" related to disrupted sleep
• Vaginal dryness and painful in*******se
• Bone density while therapy continues
• Weight Gain
Hormone therapy is not recommended solely to prevent heart disease, dementia, or osteoporosis, but symptom control can significantly improve overall quality of life.
Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
Many women experience vaginal dryness, urinary urgency, recurrent urinary tract infections, and discomfort with intimacy. These symptoms often persist even when hot flashes improve.
Low-dose vaginal estrogen provides excellent local treatment with minimal systemic absorption and can often be used safely for long-term management. Because of its favorable safety profile, vaginal estrogen has become an important part of comprehensive menopause care.
Individualized Care Matters
There is no single treatment plan that fits every woman. Decisions regarding hormone therapy should consider age, time since menopause, symptom severity, personal and family medical history, and risk factors such as blood clots or breast cancer.
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we partner with each patient to develop a personalized menopause treatment plan that balances symptom relief with safety. Whether you are entering perimenopause, experiencing bothersome menopausal symptoms, or looking for solutions for vaginal health and healthy aging, our goal is to help you feel your best through every stage of life. CellTox™ Test Kit: Measure Your Body's Oxidative Stress
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe that optimal health begins at the cellular level. Many chronic health concerns are associated with oxidative stress—an imbalance between harmful free radicals and your body's ability to neutralize them with antioxidants. The CellTox™ Test Kit is a simple, affordable screening tool that helps evaluate your body's level of oxidative stress, allowing us to create a personalized plan to support better health and longevity.
Why Take the CellTox™ Test?
Every day, your cells are exposed to oxidative stress from factors such as:
• Environmental toxins
• Heavy metals and mold exposure
• Poor diet
• Chronic stress
• Inflammation
• Normal cellular metabolism
When oxidative stress becomes excessive, it can damage cell membranes through a process called lipid peroxidation. This damage may contribute to accelerated aging, fatigue, inflammation, and chronic disease.
The CellTox™ Test measures a marker of this damage, giving your Functional Medicine provider valuable information about your cellular health.
What Does the CellTox™ Test Measure?
The CellTox™ Test measures malondialdehyde (MDA) in the urine. MDA is produced when fats within cell membranes become oxidized by free radicals.
Higher levels of MDA indicate increased lipid peroxidation and greater oxidative stress. The test uses a simple color comparison:
• Lighter color = Lower oxidative stress
• Darker color = Higher oxidative stress
This semi-quantitative test provides a quick assessment that can be performed in our office or in the comfort of your home.
How the Test Works
Taking the CellTox™ Test is simple:
1. Collect a urine sample in a clean container.
2. Use the supplied pipette to place 1 mL of urine into the test vial.
3. Wait 1–3 minutes.
4. Compare the color to the included color chart.
5. Record your score and review the results with your Functional Medicine provider at Egan Wellness & Med Spa.
What If My CellTox™ Score Is Elevated?
If your results indicate increased oxidative stress, our providers will develop a personalized plan designed to help restore cellular health. Depending on your individual needs, recommendations may include:
• Antioxidant support
• Glutathione optimization
• Nutritional counseling
• Methylation support
• Lifestyle modifications
• Detoxification strategies when appropriate
Our goal is to reduce oxidative stress, support healthy cell membranes, improve overall wellness, and promote healthy aging.
Why Choose Egan Wellness & Med Spa?
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we take a Functional Medicine approach to identifying and addressing the root causes of illness—not simply treating symptoms. The CellTox™ Test is one of many advanced tools we use to create individualized wellness plans that support long-term health. Check your oxidative stress in the comfort of your own home.

True Cellular DetoxÂŽ: A Functional Medicine Approach to Restoring Cellular Health

At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe lasting health begins at the cellular level. Many people have tried juice cleanses, detox teas, or short-term "cleanses" only to find their symptoms return. That's because true detoxification involves much more than the digestive tract—it requires supporting the body's natural ability to remove toxins from deep within the cells.

Our True Cellular DetoxÂŽ Protocol is a comprehensive functional medicine approach designed to help reduce the body's toxic burden from environmental chemicals, heavy metals, mold-related toxins, and other biotoxins while supporting healthy cellular function.

The Three Phases of True Cellular DetoxÂŽ

Unlike many detox programs, our protocol follows a step-by-step process designed to support the body's natural detoxification systems.

Phase 1: Preparation
Before mobilizing stored toxins, we strengthen the body's detox pathways by supporting the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and lymphatic circulation. This preparation helps promote efficient toxin elimination while minimizing unwanted detox symptoms.

Phase 2: Body Detoxification
Once the body's elimination pathways are functioning well, targeted nutritional support and carefully selected binders may be introduced to help bind and eliminate toxins through the digestive tract as part of the body's normal detoxification processes.

Phase 3: Brain Support
The final phase focuses on supporting neurological health and cognitive function. This stage is designed to promote healthy brain detoxification pathways while addressing concerns such as brain fog, memory changes, and mental fatigue.

The 5 R's of Cellular Restoration

Our protocol also focuses on restoring optimal cellular health through five key principles:

Remove – Identify and reduce ongoing toxic exposures such as mold, environmental chemicals, poor-quality foods, and other sources of toxic burden.

Regenerate – Support healthy cell membranes so nutrients can enter cells efficiently while waste products are removed.

Restore – Improve mitochondrial function to enhance healthy cellular energy production.

Reduce – Help lower chronic inflammation through nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted supplementation.

Reestablish – Support healthy methylation, an important biochemical process involved in detoxification, DNA repair, hormone metabolism, and overall cellular function.

Lifestyle Strategies That Support Detoxification

To maximize results, we often recommend:

An anti-inflammatory, low-sugar nutritional plan
Eliminating processed foods and unhealthy seed oils
Time-restricted eating or intermittent fasting when appropriate
Regular movement and exercise
Deep breathing and stress management
Infrared sauna therapy (when appropriate)
High-quality nutritional supplements selected specifically for your needs
Is True Cellular Detox Right for You?

Many individuals experiencing persistent fatigue, brain fog, joint discomfort, chronic inflammation, digestive concerns, or a history of mold or heavy metal exposure may benefit from a personalized evaluation. Because every patient's toxic burden is different, detoxification should always be individualized and supervised by a qualified functional medicine provider.

Start at Home!

Ask about our CellToxÂŽ At-Home Screening Kit for just $25. It's an easy first step in determining whether a personalized cellular detoxification program may benefit you.

The Truth About Your Metabolism as You AgeMany people believe weight gain is simply an unavoidable part of getting older...

The Truth About Your Metabolism as You Age

Many people believe weight gain is simply an unavoidable part of getting older. While aging does affect metabolism and hormones, significant weight gain is not inevitable. At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we take a functional medicine approach to identify the factors affecting your metabolism and create personalized strategies to help you maintain a healthy weight, preserve muscle, and support longevity.

Why Does Metabolism Change with Age?

Several factors can make weight management more challenging over time:

Loss of Lean Muscle
Starting in our 30s and accelerating after age 50, we naturally lose muscle mass (sarcopenia). Because muscle burns more calories than fat—even at rest—losing muscle lowers metabolic rate.

Reduced Activity
Many adults become less active as they age. In addition to formal exercise, everyday movement also declines, reducing overall calorie expenditure.

Hormonal Changes
Hormones play a major role in metabolism and body composition.

Women: Declining estrogen during perimenopause and menopause can increase abdominal fat, reduce muscle mass, and worsen insulin resistance.
Men: Falling testosterone levels may contribute to muscle loss, increased body fat, fatigue, and decreased strength.

Growth hormone production and insulin sensitivity also decline with age, making it easier to gain fat and harder to maintain lean muscle.

At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, hormone evaluation is an important part of our comprehensive wellness assessments because hormone optimization can significantly impact healthy aging.

Why Maintaining Muscle Matters

Muscle is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging. Preserving lean muscle helps:

• Maintain a healthy metabolism
• Improve strength and mobility
• Support bone health
• Reduce fall risk
• Improve blood sugar control
• Enhance independence and quality of life

Individuals who lose muscle while gaining body fat—a condition known as sarcopenic obesity—have higher risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and disability.

Proven Strategies for Healthy Aging
Prioritize Protein

Most adults benefit from consuming adequate protein throughout the day to support muscle maintenance and recovery.

Strength Training

Resistance training 2–3 times weekly is one of the most effective ways to preserve muscle and support metabolic health.

Stay Active

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week, along with balance and flexibility exercises.

Choose Nutrient-Dense Foods

A Mediterranean-style eating pattern rich in vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats, legumes, and whole grains supports long-term metabolic health.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration supports energy, metabolism, and overall wellness.

A Personalized Approach to Weight Loss

Many factors—including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, stress, medications, and hormone imbalances—can make weight loss difficult despite healthy habits.

At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe successful weight management starts with understanding the whole person. Our comprehensive evaluations may include hormone testing, metabolic assessments, nutritional analysis, and lifestyle reviews. Based on your needs, we may recommend nutritional counseling, hormone optimization, weight-loss medications, supplements, or other evidence-based therapies.

Weight Loss Follow-Up Visits are only $75 for established patients.

What Happens to Your Body When You Walk a Mile Every Day?
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we often remind patients that some of the most powerful health habits are also the simplest. Walking just one mile a day can improve your physical health, boost energy, and support long-term wellness.
Benefits of Walking a Mile Daily
Strengthens Muscles
Walking engages the muscles of your legs, calves, hips, and core. Walking on hills or inclines increases activation of the glutes and hamstrings, while maintaining good posture helps strengthen abdominal and back muscles. Over time, regular walking can improve balance, mobility, and posture.
Supports Bone Health
Walking is a weight-bearing exercise, meaning your bones respond to the activity by maintaining and building strength. Regular walking may help slow age-related bone loss and support overall skeletal health.
Improves Heart Health
Walking is excellent cardiovascular exercise. Daily movement helps improve circulation, supports healthy blood pressure, and strengthens the heart. Research consistently shows that increasing daily step counts is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
Creates Healthy Habits
One of the greatest benefits of walking is consistency. A daily walk provides time to decompress, enjoy nature, listen to a podcast, or connect with friends and family. Building a simple daily routine can have lasting benefits for both physical and mental well-being.
Ready for More? Try Three Miles
As your fitness improves, increasing your distance to three miles can provide even greater benefits. Consider:
• Walking hills or inclines
• Adding short bursts of faster-paced walking
• Alternating one minute fast and one minute easy
• Exploring hiking trails or new routes
A simple approach is:
• Mile 1: Warm-up pace
• Mile 2: Brisk or challenging pace
• Mile 3: Cool-down pace
Preventing Walking Injuries
If you're new to exercise or returning after illness or injury, start slowly and gradually increase your distance. Proper footwear is essential. Supportive walking shoes help protect your feet, knees, hips, and back and should be replaced regularly based on wear.
Walking With Proper Form
Good posture helps maximize benefits and reduce injury risk:
• Keep your head up and eyes forward.
• Relax your shoulders and avoid hunching.
• Let your arms swing naturally at your sides.
• Maintain an upright posture with shoulders stacked over hips.
• Land on your heel and roll smoothly through your foot, pushing off with your toes.
The Bottom Line
You don't need an intense workout program to improve your health. Walking just one mile a day can strengthen muscles, support bone density, improve cardiovascular health, and help establish lifelong healthy habits.
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we encourage simple, sustainable lifestyle changes that support long-term wellness. Whether your goal is weight loss, better heart health, increased energy, or healthy aging, a daily walk is one of the easiest and most effective places to start.
