Summer bug bites are usually just an itchy annoyance. But every bite is a break in the skin barrier, and every scratch widens it. Mosquitoes cause most insect bites worldwide, and scratching them open is a known route to secondary infection (StatPearls, 2026). That is how a bite becomes cellulitis, which drives an estimated 14.5 million United States cases a year and hits the lower legs hardest (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016). A bite reaction builds over hours. Cellulitis builds over days. If the redness is spreading on day three, that is not healing. PAM Health Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers evaluate bite wounds early, before a small bite becomes a big problem.
