Piedmont Newton Hospital In May 2019, Piedmont Newton completed a $10 million expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department.

We’re a nonprofit health care system of 27 hospitals and 2100+ physical locations providing safe, cost-effective, high-quality care close to home.

Piedmont Newton is a 103-bed, acute-care, community hospital in Covington, Georgia offering 24-hour emergency services, women’s services, a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and general medical/surgical services. The project doubled the department’s capacity from 16 beds to 32 beds, created an additional nurses’ station, and a room for higher acuity trauma cases. Serving Newton County and surrounding communities for over 60 years, Piedmont Newton Hospital offers high-quality, patient-centered care. As a not-for-profit organization, hospital earnings go directly back into maintaining and improving services and facilities and to educational outreach.

💖 Sometimes, caring goes far beyond medicine.

Our ICU team cared for 24-year-old Meredith Parker, who was heartbroken to miss a special needs prom she had eagerly awaited. When team members learned how much the event meant to her, they decided to bring the celebration to her.

While Meredith was away for a procedure, the team transformed her ICU room into a prom-worthy surprise, complete with a handmade pink and silver balloon arch, pink streamers, glittery fringe, and a beautiful bouquet of pink roses. ICU nurse McKenzie Yancy even came in on her day off to bring supplies and help make the special moment possible.

When Meredith returned, she was overwhelmed with joy and greeted the surprise with a huge smile. Meredith’s mom, Amy, later shared her appreciation for the team’s compassion and creativity:

“It was so incredibly thoughtful, and the team went above and beyond to make Meredith feel special.”

A fresh cut and an important health check! 💈🧡

This summer, Piedmont Newton and Kingzmen Grooming Barbershop teamed up for the Cut the Pressure hypertension awareness event. Together, we provided 31 free blood pressure checks, blood pressure monitor giveaways, and resources to help community members take charge of their health.

Darryel Wilson, M.D., and team members from Piedmont Physicians at Brown Bridge were on hand to answer questions and share guidance for managing blood pressure.

We are thankful to Kingzmen Grooming for their partnership and look forward to future opportunities to advance health in Newton County!

For patients navigating an unfamiliar diagnosis, a difficult treatment, or a stressful hospital stay, comfort can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, that comfort arrives on four paws.

Through Piedmont’s partnership with Happy Tails Pet Therapy, certified volunteer therapy dogs visit patients and staff across metro Atlanta. Their presence can help ease anxiety, reduce stress, and provide a calming emotional connection during moments that may feel overwhelming.

By bringing moments of comfort and reassurance into the hospital environment, programs like pet therapy help create a more supportive, compassionate experience for the people we care for.

Their visits are a reminder that even small moments of support can have a meaningful impact on a patient’s experience. 🧡

For nearly 15 years, eating a meal wasn't simple for Mike Harper.

The lifelong Newton County resident has achalasia, a rare condition that makes it difficult for food to move from the esophagus to the stomach. He learned to carefully plan meals, avoid certain foods, and even sleep with his bed elevated because of reflux.

After previous treatments provided only temporary relief, Mike was referred to Dr. Taiwo Ajose, a gastroenterologist at Piedmont Newton, who recommended a treatment Mike didn’t expect: BOTOX® injections to help relax the muscles in his esophagus.

Within three days, Mike noticed a difference.

“The procedure was quick and painless, and I can now enjoy simple things like going out to dinner with my family,” Mike said.

For Mike, getting back to those simple moments has made all the difference. 🧡

When hip and leg soreness started slowing Mark McKay down, he thought it might be a nerve issue. His primary care physician, Dr. Korie, suspected there could be more to the story.

An X-ray revealed osteoarthritis in Mark’s right hip, setting him on the path to a hip replacement and physical therapy with Piedmont Orthopedics.

Recovery meant relearning some of the everyday movements most of us never think twice about, from tying his shoes to simply moving with ease. But with a care team Mark describes as “phenomenal,” he kept moving forward.

Today, the longtime 95.5 WSB traffic reporter is back on the air, back to doing what he loves and moving more like himself again.

For Mark, the road back started with a primary care physician who recognized there might be more going on.

Piedmont Heart is No. 1 in the Southeast. 🧡

U.S. News and World Report has named Piedmont Heart Institute the best program in the Southeast for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery in its 2026–2027 Best Hospitals rankings. And for the first time, Piedmont Heart ranks among the top 20 heart programs in the nation.

Piedmont Heart also earned “High Performing” recognition in all eight heart procedures and conditions evaluated.

“Placing among the nation’s top 20 heart programs and earning the top spot in the Southeast is a testament to the exceptional physicians, nurses and clinical teams whose expertise and compassion impact patients every day,” said Patrick M. Battey, M.D., chief executive officer of Piedmont Atlanta and a Piedmont Heart physician.

The recognition extends beyond heart care. Piedmont Atlanta was also rated High Performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, and neurology and neurosurgery, placing it among the top 10% nationally for care in those specialties.

The annual Best Hospitals list is designed to help patients and providers identify hospitals that excel in the care they may need.

Primary care is often where the journey begins.

After noticing an unusual lump, Brad's primary care doctor quickly coordinated testing and connected him to the next steps, helping him get answers without delay.

Looking back, Brad says that timely, coordinated care put him on a path he never expected, but one he didn't have to navigate alone.

"The personal and competent care I received at Piedmont has put me on a path to healing so I can continue making memories with my family. For that, I am forever grateful."

Brad's story is a reminder that a primary care provider is more than someone you see for an annual checkup. They're your first call when something doesn't feel right, helping connect you to the care you need when every moment matters.

There was plenty to cheer for at Miracle Kids Night with the Columbus Clingstones, but one of the biggest moments belonged to Greenlee Lamb.

A former patient at the Piedmont Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital and the 2026 Children's Miracle Network, Greenlee threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game, surrounded by her family, care team, and a community cheering her on.

Thank you to the Columbus Clingstones for helping celebrate kids like Greenlee and supporting Children’s Miracle Network. 🧡

Piedmont Newton recently named the winners of the 2026 Promise 360 annual awards, which recognize employees who go above and beyond to make a positive difference.

🏆Annual champion: Nichole Howell, care management supervisor

⭐Spotlight honoree: Bettina Johnson, environmental services attendant
Bettina sprang into action when she encountered a woman who wasn't breathing at a nearby bus stop. Bettina alerted first responders and guided them to the scene, ensuring the woman received immediate medical care.

⭐Spotlight honoree: Kali Hammond, unit secretary
Kali demonstrated extraordinary patience, kindness, and understanding with a patient experiencing confusion. Kali also brought flowers and a prayer blanket to the patient, letting her know that she was not alone.

These caregivers embody the values that make Piedmont Newton special. Please join us in congratulating them on this well-deserved recognition!

The clinical research happening at Piedmont today is helping shape the care patients receive tomorrow.

In 2025, 1,392 patients enrolled in clinical trials at Piedmont. By year-end, 357 active trials were underway across our system, with more than 200 providers conducting research. Behind those numbers are patients accessing new treatments, physicians advancing medicine and communities benefiting from care informed by research.

In episode two of Care That Connects: Innovation Edition, we’re exploring how Piedmont research is helping expand access, improve outcomes and bring new possibilities closer to home.

See the impact of research at Piedmont: piedmont.org/research.

Five months after undergoing a quintuple bypass surgery, Greg returned to the place where his second chance began.

Only this time, he wasn’t arriving as a patient.

He ran past the hospital that helped save his life while taking part in the Peachtree Road Race.

Recovery isn’t measured by miles alone. It’s found in every step forward, every milestone reached, and every reminder of how far you’ve come.
We’re honored to have been part of Greg’s journey and grateful to celebrate this incredible moment alongside him. 🧡

Piedmont Newton recently hosted its first-ever Cancer Survivor Celebration at Legion Field, bringing survivors, families, and caregivers together to celebrate resilience, connection, and life beyond cancer.

The event featured remarks from survivors, including Owen Abeles. Diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma during his first semester at Oxford College of Emory University in 2022, Owen underwent six months of chemotherapy at Piedmont Newton while continuing his studies. He's now in remission, pursuing a master’s degree in bioethics, and starting a nonprofit focused on cancer survivorship. He's also applying to medical school and hopes to become an oncologist.

“My healing has come from using my experience to help other cancer survivors be seen,” said Owen.

Piedmont Newton continues to expand its oncology services so our community can access high-quality care close to home.

Join us in celebrating these amazing survivors and the loved ones and care teams who support them! 🧡
