In November of 2022, my 18 year old son died in an auto accident. After two months I made a decision to take a trip to South America to "get away" for a while. Grief was overwhelming and devastating. Everything reminded me of him and I needed to process my grief with some space. During the Panama part of the six country visit, I booked a trip to stay with an indigenous tribe. While there, I met this sweet boy. He reminded me a lot of my son and he latched on to me as much as I latched on to him. Everywhere I went, he went. He didn't know English, but some how we communicated, heart to heart. He provided the first round of healing medicine I needed while I was there. Come see this portrait titled "The Child" on display at the North Hills Art Center for the member art show September 12 through October 2, 2026.

Painting is a new format for me, but one I have been using to help me process the death of my son at age 18 in 2022. This piece manifested on its own. One particular hard day I sat at my easel, without any intention other than to some how move grief through my body. There are four layers under his face. I kept painting, would be unhappy with whatever was on the canvas, cover it up with black paint and start again. Eventually a face stared to appear. I didn’t even see him in it at first. The music that started playing in the background was Lady A’s Golden. That opened the door for my grief to find the expression it needed and Dawson’s abstract face appeared. It has taken about six months for me to finish it. Golden!

When you buy from an independent artist, the money doesn't disappear into a warehouse somewhere; it goes directly toward more work getting made.

That's the whole engine. Choosing "Before the Hurricane" isn't just a decorating decision, it's a vote for more art to exist.

If you're falling in love with "9" or my other artwork, consider proportions and measurements.

Queen and Her Lace

I titled this one "Queen and Her Lace." I photographed the Queen Anne’s lace from below to let its green ribs and lace-like clusters reveal their geometry against a soft, out-of-focus sky. There’s a quiet tension here — fragile petals held by precise, almost architectural stems — that always moves me.

Which part draws you in more: the graphic green spokes or the cloud of white blooms? Tell me below, and tell me where you’d hang it — above a reading nook or a calm bedroom wall?

I think this piece would make a subtle, graceful addition to a room that needs a gentle, natural touch.

A camera won’t fix your life—but it can help you stay in it. After profound loss, even noticing feels impossible. Through photography, I found a way to redirect my mind, reconnect with the present, and begin seeing myself again. You don’t need skill or permission—just willingness. One photo, one moment at a time, you can move from surviving to quietly, powerfully living again.

You don’t need to be “a photographer” to let a camera change your life. You just need to be willing to begin again even while still grieving. (Photos of Portugal included.)
