In 2022,the U.S. experienced a 3% increase in IMR, marking
the first year-to-year rise in two decades a concerning trend
that underscores the need for continued focus on maternal
and infant health outcomes.

Though progress has been slow, the US infant mortality rate dropped from 5.54 death per 1,000 live births in the 12 month period ending in late 2024
to 5.36 deaths per1,000 live births in 2025, which
researchers confirm is a statistically significant decrease.

We have to remember though that celebration of continued improvement can mask the reality that over 20,000 infants died before reaching their first birthday.

As we begin National Infant Mortality Awareness Month, we are reminded that every child deserves the chance to thrive and every family deserves access to the care and support needed for a healthy start.

Although infant mortality rates have improved, the United States continues to experience higher rates of infant death than many other high-income countries, and differences in outcomes among communities remain significant.

This month is more than an observance. It is a call to action.
We encourage communities, policymakers, health care providers, public health professionals, and advocates to:

-Raise awareness about infant mortality and its causes.
-Support evidence-based maternal and infant health programs.
-Promote safe sleep, prenatal care, and postpartum care.
-Address social and economic barriers that affect birth outcomes.
-Invest in Healthy Start and other community-based initiatives that help families thrive.

Together, we can reduce preventable infant deaths and ensure that every baby has the opportunity to celebrate a first birthday.

Healthy Babies. Healthy Families. Healthy Communities. Healthy Start.

Today, we remember the lives lost to overdose. Behind every statistic is a person—a loved one, a friend, a parent, a child. Every life lost leaves an empty space that can never be replaced.

Today is also a reminder that overdose prevention saves lives. Narcan (naloxone) can reverse an opioid overdose and give someone the opportunity to survive, recover, and find a path forward.
Montgomery County has NaloxBoxes located throughout the community, providing access to naloxone when it is needed. Know where to find it. How to use it. Don't be afraid to help.

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use or needs support, the Crawfordsville Department of Mobile Integrated Health - Quick Response Team is available 24/7 at 765-401-6200. Call or text. You don't have to wait for a crisis to ask for help.

We are thrilled to congratulate our incredible Project Swaddle Nurse, Carlin Traylor, on earning her Certified Lactation Counselor credential through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice!

This achievement reflects months of dedication, extensive coursework, and a deep commitment to supporting families with evidence-based lactation education and care. With this certification, Carlin is now able to provide comprehensive, evidence-based support to our Project Swaddle families, including prenatal breastfeeding counseling and postpartum troubleshooting. From preparing parents before baby arrives to helping navigate feeding challenges after delivery, Carlin’s expertise will make a meaningful difference for the families we serve.

We could not be prouder of Carlin and her commitment to growing her knowledge to better support our community. Please join us in celebrating this outstanding accomplishment!
