Yesterday we celebrated Ramsie on her last day with us. Today we want to share one more piece of her legacy: this op-ed in the The Chronicle of Philanthropy, published on June 24th, WHC WV's 50th anniversary and the four-year anniversary of Dobbs.

Ramsie wrote about what we lost overnight when Roe fell, and what saved us. The truth is, it was you. It was this community. It was 50 years of people who refused to let this place disappear.

Today, we honor Juneteenth: the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, more than two years after emancipation had already been declared. That gap between what is owed and what is reachable is still a gap we’re trying to close today.

If you’d sit and stay awhile, we’d like to share a little about this region’s history, the communities that helped each other, and about the freedom traditions that still wind through these hills today.

When abortion became illegal in West Virginia overnight, we crossed those same mountains and found ourselves on the grounds of what would become WHC’s second clinic in Cumberland, MD. Today, half of the patients we serve in Cumberland come from states with total abortion bans or restrictions.

Long before WHC MD existed, Mountain Maryland and Mountain Mama were already looking out for each other. About two hundred years ago, the mountains that split WV and MD marked the passageway that carried freedom seekers north along the Underground Railroad. Emmanuel Episcopal Church, right up the road from our MD clinic, was a safe point — the tunnels still wind through the cellar walls.

That same spirit of safe harbor runs through our own history.

This month, WHC WV, celebrates 50 years — that clinic started in the rectory of a friendly ally — Reverend Jim Lewis, who offered our founders a safe meeting place when they could not find one elsewhere. Different decades, different doors, same instinct: when our people need refuge, this region answers.

We do not claim the history of the Underground Railroad as our own. We claim the tradition of
community care and safe harbor as our inheritance, and our responsibility to carry forward.

Juneteenth marks freedom delayed, but never denied. The playbooks being used to strip away our bodily autonomy, dignity, and self determination are old. To win this fight, we must honor the communities among us who have made this journey before and who hold the keys to our collective liberation.

🖤 Happy Juneteenth, y’all. Link in our stories to read the full article!

Today marks one year since the Skrmetti decision, when the Supreme Court restricted access to care for trans youth in Ohio. Next week marks four years since Roe was overturned, effectively banning abortion in both WV and OH. And while we’ve always known that abortion care patients and transgender patients were not separate communities, that conviction is stronger now than ever.

In a new joint op-ed, we wrote about the intersection of abortion rights and trans rights—and how independent clinics like ours have stayed, expanded care, and stepped up to meet the needs of our communities.

The WHC Choice Fund, an abortion fund that helps Marylanders and West Virginians access legal abortion care, has a new face!

We’re thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s Pet Mascot Contest, finishing with a total of $3,212.86 for the WHC Choice Fund, Phoebe the Terrier! 🎊🐾

Thanks to ALL pet participants and WHC supporters who donated, we didn’t just meet our $10,000 fund-a-thon goal—we surpassed it by more than $5,000! Together, we raised $15,568 for abortion seekers who would otherwise go without care. 💚💜

In a moment when access is being pushed further and further out of reach, YOU showed up—for our patients, for Appalachia, and for reproductive freedom. From all of us at WHC: THANK YOU! Your support means the world to us and even more to the people whose lives will be changed by it.

If you're a Marylander or West Virginian who needs help paying for an abortion, give us a call at 304-344-9834 if you're in WV or 301-709-5101 if you're in MD.📲
