It’s not uncommon for parents to feel defeated.

They’ve been told:
“He’ll grow out of it.”
“She’s just picky.”
“You’re overreacting.”

But you know your child better than anyone.

At Sensory Solutions, your concerns are heard, respected, and taken seriously. You just need the right support.

If you’ve been dismissed or told to “wait it out,” we’re here to help you get real answers.

Wondering what actually happens during a feeding evaluation?
At Sensory Solutions, an OT and Speech Therapist work together to look at:

Speech:
• Chewing patterns
• Tongue + jaw movement
• Oral motor strength
• Swallowing mechanics

OT:
• Food groups your child eats
• Texture or taste aversions
• Sensory responses to sight/smell
• Opportunities to expand the diet

Two experts. One child. One clear plan forward.

Message us to schedule a feeding evaluation — often available within the same week.

Today we are celebrating Ms. Maggie for National Speech-Language-Hearing Month!

Maggie works at 2 of our locations and two schools we contract with for services!

Get to know Maggie:
Favorite color: Grey
Favorite food: Mac and cheese
Favorite animal: Hippo
Favorite team: Chicago cubs and Chicago Blackhawks (sorry St. Louis!)
Hobbies: Reading, walking her dog, and watching movies
College: Augustana College
Reason for getting into the field: “When I was in high school, I lived next door to a kiddo in speech therapy, and being able to watch him go from having no words to using sentences inspired me to learn more about the field! I took one intro course in college and never looked back!”

Speech tip: “Sometimes it's hard for kids to come up with what they want or make decisions on the spot! Providing 2-3 options can help decrease the pressure of coming up with their own idea and help them respond to whatever question you are asking!”

Speech Therapy Activity: “Tissue Trick”

The “tissue trick” is a simple way to help children hear and feel the difference between the sounds /p/ and /b/. Hold a tissue slightly in front of your child’s mouth while they say the sound.
• For /p/, a puff of air comes out of the mouth, so the tissue should move or blow forward. This is because /p/ is a “quiet” sound that uses air.
• For /b/, the lips move the same way, but the voice is turned off, and there is much less air released, so the tissue should stay still.
This visual cue can help children learn how to produce /p/ without turning it into /b/, especially if they tend to voice their sounds.

Get to know Courtney:
Favorite color: Blue and green
Favorite restaurant: Trattoria Marcella
Favorite animal: Elephants
Favorite team: St. Louis Blues

Reason for getting into the field: “I wanted to become a pediatric SLP because I love working with kids and seeing their personalities grow with their language and speech skills!”
