In 2013, Thomas Insel, then director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), announced a paradigm shift and policy change in how clinicians should approach and treat anxiety, depression and mood disorders. Given advances in neuroscience, he posited, it was clear that mental health disorders were BIOLOGICAL DISORDERS stemming from changes to brain circuitry and neural structure. According to NIMH's new policy, figuring out how to treat the circuitry differences underlying mental disorders should be clinicians' primary treatment target.
