Sometimes, it's the little things families remember most.

A favorite photograph tucked inside the casket.

Grandpa's old work gloves.

Mom's handwritten recipe cards.

A fishing pole, a well-worn baseball cap, a rosary, a quilt, or the song everyone knew by heart.

None of these things are particularly elaborate.

But they tell a story.

The most meaningful funerals aren't necessarily the biggest or the most traditional. They're the ones that leave you thinking, “That was them.”

Those little details have a way of becoming some of the things families remember most.

Back-to-school season has a way of bringing back memories.

The first-day pictures. New shoes and backpacks. Packed lunches. Rushing out the door because someone was going to miss the bus.

And behind so many of those memories were the people who helped raise us.

Parents who made sure we got there on time. Grandparents waiting for us after school. Teachers who saw something in us before we saw it ourselves. Coaches, neighbors, aunts, uncles, and others who simply showed up when we needed them.

Years later, we may not remember every lesson or every school day.

But we remember the people who were there.

Thomas F. "Tom" Welter

Dickeyville, Wisconsin

Thomas F. “Tom” Welter, 64, of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Casey-McNett Funeral Home in Cuba City, Wisconsin. A graveside service will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Kieler, Wisconsin, with Fr. Greg Ihm officiating. Following the burial, a celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Sunset Lanes and Hall, Dickeyville, Wisconsin, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Tom was born on May 6, 1962, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Norbert and Margaret (Freese) Welter.

Tom was self-employed with Welter Drywall for more than 30 years, doing what he knew best, hanging drywall and working hard. He took pride in his work and built a reputation as someone people could always count on. After retiring from the drywall business, Tom worked as a delivery driver for Sloan Implement in Bloomington.

When he wasn’t working, Tom enjoyed spending time doing the things he loved. He especially enjoyed coaching his son, Brad, in youth baseball and being involved in the game. Those years and the memories they made together meant a great deal to him. Tom was also an avid bowler who spent many years league bowling and competing in tournaments, making plenty of friends along the way.

Tom was a loyal sports fan and could often be found cheering on the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed following his teams and talking sports with friends and family.

Tom will be remembered as a hardworking, down-to-earth man who enjoyed the simple things in life: family, friends, sports, and good times spent with the people he cared about.

Tom is survived by his siblings, Betty Neuhaus, Jerry (Donna) Welter, and Barb (Tim) Schmidt, all of Dubuque, IA, Ken (Sherry) Welter, Dickeyville, WI, and Janet (Jim) Zart, Fennimore, WI; his partner, Marilyn Blindert, Potosi, WI; his stepchildren, Tony Capps and Jessica Capps; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Margaret; his son, Brad Welter; his stepson, Michael Capps; his brother, Michael Welter in infancy; and his brother-in-law, Dave Neuhaus.

Mary Kay Leifker

Mary Kay “MK” Leifker, 67, of Dubuque, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin, with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Visitation will be held from 9-10:45 a.m. Wednesday, August 19 at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will take place at Nativity BVM Church Cemetery in Menominee, Illinois.

Mary Kay “MK” was born on January 28, 1959, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bert and Mary (Tranel) Leifker. As a child, she courageously battled rheumatic fever, a challenge she overcame with remarkable determination and resilience – qualities that remained with her throughout her life. She graduated from Cuba City High School with the class of 1977 before attending the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she graduated with honors in 1981. She later earned her master’s degree, further reflecting her lifelong commitment to learning and education.

Following graduation, MK moved to the Chicago area, where she devoted her career to education. She began as a physical education teacher before becoming a guidance counselor and an assistant principal, positively impacting the lives of countless students throughout her career. After retiring from Leyden High School in Chicago, she made her home in Evanston, Illinois. Following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, she moved to Mt. Carmel in Dubuque to be closer to her family, where she received compassionate care.

Athletics was a big part of Mary Kay’s life. She was a member of the first Cuba City High School state basketball team in 1977 and went on to have an outstanding basketball career at UW-Platteville. MK was also a member of several Maryville Construction softball teams that competed at state and national tournaments. She went on to share her passion for sports as a high school basketball and softball coach.

MK embraced life with enthusiasm and adventure. She loved traveling, Cubs’ games, spending time with friends, and staying active through softball and a variety of recreational sports. A devoted sports fan, she faithfully cheered on the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers. She will be remembered for her warm and welcoming smile, strong will, intelligence, athletic spirit, and unwavering sense of individuality. Her determination, kindness, and love for those around her left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

Mary Kay is survived by her siblings, Merlin (Pat) Leifker, Spring Green, WI, Bob Leifker, Galena, IL, Jeanne (John) Frantzen, Dubuque, IA, and Marlene Derby, Cuba City, WI; a sister-in-law, Carol Leifker, Thornton, CO; and many nieces, nephews, and a special niece, JoAnn (Troy) Clemen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Orville Mueller; a brother, Jim Leifker; and a sister-in-law, Rita Leifker.

David K. Houtakker

David K. Houtakker, 78, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, August 7, 2026. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2026, at St. Rose of Lima Church, Cuba City, Wisconsin, with Rev. David Flanagan and Deacon Bill Bussan officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2026 at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin. A second visitation will be held from 9-10:45 a.m. Friday, August 14 at the church prior to the service.

David was born on September 22, 1947, in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, the son of Phillip and Sylvia (Kunkel) Houtakker. He attended Hazel Green High School. David was united in marriage to Adele Ricke on May 16, 1970 at Nativity BVM Church in Menominee, Illinois.

Always prioritizing hard work, David worked for Dubuque Packing Company before owning and operating his own dairy farm with Adele, from 1982 until 2010, when he retired. He served his country in the Army from 1966-1968 serving one year in the Vietnam war. He passed on his tremendous work ethic to his children, involving all of them in the farm work. David and Adele enjoyed dancing, belonging to a card club and wintering in Mesa, Arizona. He treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially teasing them, telling jokes and “grabbing” their noses. Above all, David loved his family and will be remembered for his smile, compassion and sense of humor.

David is survived by his wife, Adele Houtakker, Cuba City, WI; his children, Tammy (Dan) Aurit, Slinger, WI, Julie (Chris) Redfearn, Benton, WI, Sara (Kurt) Biddick, Janesville, WI, and Jason (Kellie) Houtakker, Benton, WI; a sister, Rita Baumhover, Bella Vista, AK; a sister-in-law, Ruth Houtakker, Benton, WI; 12 grandchildren, Darian (Luke) Dykstra, Danielle (Evan) Rogers, Paige (Cody) Williams, Matthew (Zoee) Aurit, Elizabeth Aurit, Bailey (Brock) Knautz, Joshua (Erin) Redfearn, Kiah, Allison and Leah Biddick, and Cooper and Kinze Houtakker; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Rosemary (Arlyn) Vondra, Harold (Kathryn) Houtakker, Joan (Jim) Linden, Betty (Lloyd) Nuxoll, and Donald Houtakker; a sister-in-law, Celine Houtakker; and a brother-in-law, Gary Baumhover.

Ryan M. Petitgoue

Cuba City, Wisconsin

Ryan M. Petitgoue, 49, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at UW Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2026, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Cuba City, Wisconsin, with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Visitation will be held from 2-6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Casey-McNett Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cuba City, Wisconsin. A second visitation will be held from 9-10:45 a.m. Monday, August 3 at the church prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Galena Illinois.

Ryan was born on September 21, 1976, in Cuba City, Wisconsin, to Gerald “Jerry” and Joan (Pandow) Petitgoue. Ryan graduated from Cuba City High School in 1995. He then attended University of Dubuque, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management in 1999 and a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 2001.

Ryan worked for Mid-America Management Group in Dubuque, Iowa. He also worked for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in several capacities, including setting up Twitter and media accounts, and serving as a board member. Ryan proudly coached boys’ high school basketball with his late father, Jerry Petitgoue. Above all, he loved spending time with his family. He especially cherished time spent with his son, Logan, traveling, and trips to Las Vegas. Ryan was an avid fan of Wisconsin Badgers and Marquette University basketball. In his free time, he loved working out and was a self-described foodie. Ryan will be remembered as a “people person” who loved meeting new people and hearing their stories.

Survivors include his son, Logan Petitgoue, Urbandale, IA; his mother, Joan Petitgoue, Cuba City, WI; two siblings, Michele (Scott) Walch, Peachtree Corners, GA, and Mark (Jen Dalsing) Petitgoue, Milwaukee, WI; his godparents, Ann Morrison and John Dotzel; several special nieces and nephews; two great-nieces; and many aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Jerry” Petitgoue.
