We hope everyone has a healthy week! Our clinic will be closed on Friday in observance of our country's 250th birthday.

As you and your family are planning for festivities please remember that fireworks are inherently dangerous. Several years ago we carefully lit off some of the "safe and sane" fireworks available for purchase at the local parking lot tents and, even with remote fuse starts and a hose at the ready, one of them misfired and caught our son's shirt on fire. Fortunately we put it out before he got more than a small scar, but as doctors we caution our patients not to risk permanent damage by lighting off fireworks yourselves. Every year many people end up with injuries that could be avoided. Stay safe!

Katie, "our" phlebotomist, is leaving us for a new adventure as a stay-at-home mom! We have loved having her and will miss her but wish her the best as she gets to love her kids full time now.

Please drop a note here if you've appreciated Katie so she gets to hear again that she has made a difference.

Katie has been working with us through a partnership with Labcorp, and they're looking for a new part time phlebotomist to take her spot. In the interim we will appreciate their floats who have also been great when they've covered for Katie before.

We are now 4 months into being our own independent clinic and are thankful we are figuring things out more! Now that we are finding our stride in this we are opening back up to taking some new patients. If you or a loved one is looking for a family physician who focuses on what's best for you, not an insurance company, feel free to call and schedule a visit.

Found one small shoe. If your little Cinderella lost their shoe at our office we have it waiting for you.

Insurance. Ugh.
So now United Health Care has started sending out letters to patients telling them that we are not covered under their plan effective March 1, and assigning them to new primary care providers.
We want to assure our patients that we have done all that we have been asked, over and over again, to ensure this transition to independent practice would be as seamless as possible. We only found out about this new issue from a patient who notified us early this morning.
We have been assured by UHC that we ARE in network, including an email verifying both Dr. Tim and Dr. Nikki are covered and all the information is correct as of March 3. This WILL be remedied, but this is frustrating to say the least.
So, just like we had to do with Humana, we are working to figure out where this error arose, how to remedy it, and asking for help from our contacts along the way. We are also trying to be as transparent as possible with our patients to try to minimize your distress as this is a lot of hassle.

UPDATE- Due to the weather and power outages in the area, in-person clinic is cancelled today. Drs. Tim & Nikki will be available for virtual visits.

The weather tomorrow is uncertain. Though we are planning to still have in-person clinic right now, we will have the option of virtual. We will be checking the weather tomorrow morning and will contact scheduled patients if in-person clinic is cancelled. If you can not make it safely please do not come! We do not want to see anyone hurt.

Update on the Humana Medicare insurance issue. Apparently the group that was coordinating our continued credentialing with Humana made a mistake about our new Tax ID, so Humana marked us as not being active on their rosters any longer. That is being remedied (though apparently not all the way done yet despite the email assurances that things were already resolved - sorry), and we were never supposed to be dropped from being approved by them. Unfortunately, these mistakes cause ripple consequences in this increasingly complex world of insurance, so now all prescriptions, orders for imaging, referrals and labs that we ordered for the 120+ affected patients since January 1 are being marked as coming from non-approved providers, and patients are starting to get bills from the third party labs, hospitals, and other clinics. Ugh. This is intensely frustrating and completely beyond our control as we were told we were approved and had no issues.

Despite this, our office manager and billing specialist are working hard with the contacts at Humana and the company that was supposed to be managing our credentialing to ask them to review all interactions we had with affected patients during this mistake to re-submit the claims as being ordered by covered physicians. If you are one of our Humana Medicare patients and are getting unexpected bills from Labcorp or the local hospitals or specialists for what were supposed to be covered expenses, please know that we are working to address this issue on your behalf. We can control OUR bills, but we are also working with the other third parties to ask them to hold off on billing until this issue with Humana is resolved and asking Humana to review all claims during the past 3 months to re-submit them as appropriately approved.

It is getting harder and harder to work with insurance companies, and they are certainly making us jump through more hoops to ensure our patients actually get the care that the insurance companies are being paid to provide, but we are doing our best to navigate this.

Update - Humana has verified that this was a mistake, that we ARE covered, and they will be sending new letters to all patients who were affected.

Oh the joys of insurance. Several patients have told us they received letters from Humana Medicare that we are no longer in their network. That was news to us! Our office manager and billing specialist have been on the phone with Humana a lot yesterday trying to figure out what happened, and we are being told this was an error on Humana's part. So, if you have recieved a letter like this please know we are actively working with Humana to resolve this issue!

The forecast for tomorrow is frigid, and several schools are closing. We still plan to be open and available for our patients as scheduled tomorrow, but we do encourage everyone to stay safe and warm! We believe in the value of seeing and examining patients in person, but we do still have the option of virtual visits for times like this!
