Mary Kay “Aunt Bea” (Migdol) Ternent, 68, of LaVale, MD passed away surrounded by her family July 16, 2026 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD.

She was born January 27, 1958 in New Jersey, then raised in Cumberland, MD, and was the daughter of the late Cathrean and Michael Migdol Sr.. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two of her brothers, James Migdol and Larry Migdol; and her favorite puppy, Precious.

Mary graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1976. She then started her family, after several jobs, she began a career with Verizon as an operator from which she retired.

She liked playing in the Women’s Shuffleboard League. Above all else she loved being with her family.

Surviving her is her husband and love of 33 years, Larry Ternent, Jr.; sons, Jason Boyce (Catrina) and Adam Boyce (Stephanie), Bryan Ternent (Brittani), Justin Ternent-Wittenbach (James); granddaughters, Madisen Boyce (Jacob) and Makkayla; grandsons, Dashanti Garlitz, Elijah Ternent; two sisters, Shirley Sweitzer and Kathy Rose (Murray); two brothers, Ronnie Poling (Priscilla) and her twin brother Mike Migdol (Vicki); a large extended family including many nieces and nephews; many friends; and her puppies, Sassy and Fuzzy.

Visitation will be Monday, July 20th from 12 to 2:00pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD. A funeral service will begin at 2:00pm with her brother-in-law Pastor Blaine Cutter officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jason, Adam, Justin, Bryan, Dashanti, and Jacob.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD.

Elizabeth Vernie Groves, 85, passed away on July 3, 2026 peacefully at her home, surrounded by her five daughters.

She was born in the same house in Rawlings, MD on October 1, 1940 to the late, Herman N. and Elizabeth (Carr) Duckworth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph Groves; and her grandson, Adam Wayne Cool.

Vernie graduated from Bruce High school, Westernport, MD, in 1958. She went on to be a homemaker, and worked in the food service while living in Thurmont, MD. She worked at Cozy Rest, McDonalds, and Mt. St. Mary’s University for Aramark food service. She also catered multiple parties and weddings over the years. Her mother’s potato salad recipe was very popular, especially by the Downs sisters. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Rawlings and Thurmont, MD.

She is survived by her brother, Tom Duckworth and wife Kathy. She is also survived by her five loving daughters, Gina Clarke, Terri Eiker and husband Marvin, Judy Downs and husband Jeff, Karen Sanders and husband Bob, and Leslie Cool and husband Jr; eight grandchildren, Desi and Scott, Chasity and Tom, Kris and Ashley, and Sarah and Flave, Dylan and Shontay, Andrew and Abby, Katie and Kellie; step-granddaughter, Roxan and Jason; eleven great-grandchildren, Grace, Kenny, Jonathan, Haylee, Nick, Hannah, Emmett, Chase, Allison, Nora Jo, and Iris Kay; step great-grandchildren, Eli, Jesse, Jase, Madison, and Cayden; one great-great-granddaughter, Addyson; several close cousins, especially the Ketterman and the Lease families; and her best-friends Nancy, Bessie, and Grace.

Vernie had a wonderful life with a beautiful family and group of friends.

A visitation will be Tuesday, July 7th from 1 to 3:00pm and 5 to 7:00pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD.

A funeral service will be at the funeral home, Wednesday, July 8th beginning at 11:00am with Pastor Gordon Brubaker officiating.

Interment will follow beside her husband in Waxler Cemetery, Rawlings, MD.

Pallbearers will be Kris, Nick, Jon, Chase, Dylan, Andrew, Flave, Kenny, and Jimmy.

Nancy Johanne (Growden) Jones, 85, of West Salem, OH, formerly of Centerville PA, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026 at Samaritan Hospital in Ashland, OH.

Born April 21, 1941, in Centerville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ross Ambrose and Della (Miller) Growden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Albert Growden and wife Betty, Colleen Virginia Oehmig and husband Clem, Donna Growden and Patricia Growden.

Nancy was a hard worker and a dedicated employee. She did factory work for 30 plus years and finished her retirement in the bakery department at Walmart.

Nancy enjoyed reading books, watching her tv shows. She enjoyed cooking, photography and spending time with her family. Nancy was a big part of a small community at Hidden Akers Camp Ground. Everyone who came and went knew her and adored her.

Nancy is survived by her children, Emmett Voshel and significant other Jeanie Barnett, Robert Voshel and wife Roxanne, Kenneth Voshel and significant other Stacy Strosnider, Ronald Voshel and significant other April Cross, 9 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. Siblings, James Ross Growden and wife Judy, Betty Cassell and husband Charles, Naomi Ruth Spurr and husband Robert, David Norman Growden and wife Jenny and Kimberly Bible and husband Danny; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway SW, Cresaptown on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.

A graveside service with Danny Bible will follow beginning 1:30pm at Fellowship Cemetery, Cemetery Rd, Centerville, PA, 15522. Following the graveside service there will be a last meal to be announced.

Vada L. (Wigfield) Birmingham, 87, of Cresaptown, MD passed away peacefully January 27, 2026 at UPMC Western Maryland.

She was born January 23, 1939 in Bedford County, PA to the late Edgar and Lena Wigfield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert H. Birmingham in 1973 at age 36; and her friend and sister-in-law, Mary Birmingham.

Vada graduated from Everett Area High School and continued her education at Catherman’s Business School and Frostburg State University, where she received her Bachelors degree in Business Management. She had an accomplished administrative career and held positions at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, Kelly Springfield Tire Co., and Allegany Co Public School System.

She was a very talented person. For a time she had a full kiln set up for making ceramics. She liked tending to her flower garden, especially her beloved irises, and quilting where she finished quilts started by her mother, and doing applique. Vada was a big Elvis fan. She also enjoyed photography, collecting Hallmark ornaments, and attending jewelry shows. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She always had a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and hosted the family Thanksgiving holiday.

She is survived by her brother, Dale F. Wigfield and companion Jean; nephews, Troy L. Wigfield and wife Tawnya of Schellsburg, PA and Travis Wigfield and wife Anahi of Bedford, PA; and her extended family and friends.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Harold McClay officiating.

Internment will be private at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland, MD.

CRESAPTOWN – Chris D. Twigg, 67, of Cresaptown, MD, passed away with his loving wife at his side, Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.

Born May 19, 1958, in Cumberland, MD, he was a son of the late James C. and Anna Belle (Lawrence) Twigg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lawana Belle (Twigg) Swan.

Chris graduated from Allegany High School in 1976, where he played football while excelling in academics. Chris was an excellent carpenter and worked in his trade for 40 years, he was a lifetime member of the Carpenters Local Union 1024 and primary worked with Carl Belt Corp, along with many other contractors and jobs.

He loved to bowl, which is how he met his wife. He enjoyed the outdoors while hunting. Sports were a big large part of his life, especially following college football (Notre Dame) and pro football (Redskins), and college basketball (Maryland). Traveling with was very special to him and he enjoyed Canada, Memphis, Nashville, and the best was Hawaii with his wife.

Surviving him is his beloved wife of 25 years, Rosemary “Rose” Twigg, and her son who considered him his father, Brian H. Schurg; a brother, James A. Twigg and wife Sherry and their children J.J. Twigg and wife Missy their children Haylee and Jet, Misty Dotson and husband Bruce their children McKinlee and Miabella; his late sister’s children, Tonya Ross her children Anthony and Arneshia, and Crystal Alexander and her sons Gary and Tim; a large extended family; many friends; and his very special cats, Dolly, Lucky, Cruiser, and Penny.

Visitation will be at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, on Saturday, January 31st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m..

A funeral service will immediately follow beginning at 1:00 p.m. celebrated by Deacon Ryan Schmeltzer, OFM Cap..

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale, MD.

Dr. Jesus H. Tan, 78, of Cumberland, MD passed away surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at UPMC Western Maryland after a brief illness.

Born December 25, 1947, in Leyte, Philippines, he was the son of the late Tan Eh Pang and Ho On Ty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Erlinda Chua Tan; his second wife, Sandra Sarvida Tan; his brothers, San Ben Tan and Bing Tan; and a sister, Dr. Saturnina “Nina” Tan Chang.

In the Philippines, Jesus graduated from the University of San Carlos followed by the Cebu Institute of Medicine, completing his doctorate of medicine in 1972. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Beekman Downtown Hospital in New York City, also serving as Chief Medical Resident. In 1978, he moved to Cumberland, MD and began practicing medicine, and started his own practice in 1983 with his sister, Dr. Saturnina Chang. He has cared for patients at Sacred Heart Hospital, Frostburg Community Hospital, Western Maryland Health System, and UPMC, as well as many nursing homes in the Tri-State area and the Massie Unit for substance abuse treatment. He never stopped practicing medicine for his community.

Jesus enjoyed movies and traveling with his family, and of course food. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, Allegany County Medical Society, and the Maryland State Medical Society.

Surviving are his children: Dr. Jeremias Chua Tan and wife Dr. Hanita Oh-Tan, Ethel Tan Masten and husband Stephen, Emma Tan Chan and husband Gaston, Joshua Sarvida Tan and partner Liana Ip; six grandchildren: Olivia Tan, Zachary Tan, Jacob Masten, Payton Masten, Kennedy Masten, and Anastasia Chan; three sisters: Conchita Tan Yap, Pampila Tan, Juliana Tan Go and husband Sotero; and his large extended family including numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his companion, Sue Winkler.

Visitation will be at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, MD, Sunday, February 1st, from 1-3:00 p.m. and 5-7:00 p.m. A wake service will take place during the evening visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 201 N Centre St, Cumberland, MD on Monday, February 2nd at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Mark Carter, OFM Cap.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cumberland.

Dorothy Clarabelle Rhoads, 97, passed peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. She is predeceased by her loving husband C. Donald Rhoads.

Born on April 20, 1928 in Johnstown, PA to Helen Lillian and Ralph Henry Constable, she was one of 9 children. She grew up in a happy, loving home. Dorothy is the last to join her parents and siblings in eternal rest.

Dot had faith and family as the center of her life. She is survived by her children, Earl Freeman (Sue,) Diane Rhoads, Linda Hafer, Kevin Rhoads (Stacy,) and Carol Rhoads (Jerry), as well as grandchildren Danny (Elise,) Megan, Tommy, Ellie (Kyle,) Ben, Kim and Terri. Dot also is survived by her 5 great grandchildren: Cara, Lillian, Perrin, Rooney and Olive Joy, and 4 step grandchildren.: Zack, Emily, Brittany and Cassandra.

Dot grew up a member of Park Avenue United Methodist church of Johnstown, PA. If you ask her and her husband, Don, this is where they met. Being born just two weeks apart and attending the same church, they met sleeping together in a crib in the church nursery. Dad loved to say they slept together before it was popular.

Dot later joined The First United Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg, PA, and finally, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Cumberland, MD. She truly felt at home with her church family. There, she sang in the choir, served the community children and volunteered in numerous other ways. Dorothy was a woman of strong faith and never swore, but in her later years she was a founding member of the “Good Christian Bitches,” a close group of friends from St. Paul’s who would gather frequently for afternoon snacks, games and laughter.

Her legacy lives on in her family members. Dot valued having all of her family together. She was always the hostess for holidays and beds were made up and ready for any child or grandchild that wanted to visit. She consistently made home-cooked meals, and her tasty home-made applesauce has been enjoyed by many. For the majority of her long life, there was never a summer without a Rhoads beach vacation or a girl’s weekend without a shopping spree.

Dot’s life was filled with card clubs, arranging bus trips, painting, attending aerobics all the way through her 80s, and gathering friends and family. She was great at staying connected with those in her life. In her later years she filled her days with puzzles, looking through photo albums and watching home videos and just about every Hallmark movie there is.

Her children and grandchildren will always be grateful for the light she was in the family. There will always be a funny story to tell or a memory to share about “Mom,” “Grandma,” “Granny” and “Gigi.” Her humor, her silly words and sayings, her made up songs - they will all be remembered and repeated fondly.

Visitation will be held at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, MD, on Tuesday, Oct 14th from 4-7pm.

On Wednesday, visitation will be from 10-11am in the vestibule of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 15 N Smallwood St, Cumberland, MD, followed by a funeral service at 11am with Rev. Ryan Viands officiating.

Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, PA.

Marie D. Kroll, 87, of Lakewood, WV, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at her home.

Born on February 4, 1938, Marie was the daughter of the late William and Irene (Holmes) Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Earl Lee Kroll; her son, Matthew T. Kroll; sister, Betty (Miller) Geiger and husband Chuck Geiger; and her brothers, Bobby J. Miller, David Gene Miller, and William F. Miller.

Marie worked at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory until 1965, until she became a homemaker. She enjoyed being with her family and loved to eat out and shop.

Marie enjoyed floral design and had her own consignment shop in Martinsburg, WV for 5 years. She also belonged to the Bel Air Garden Club having a life long love of flowers.

Marie is survived by two daughters, Leann Frank and husband Dave, and Stacy Wolfe and husband Shannon; three grandchildren, Heather Frank of Somerville, MA, Hunter Frank of Rawlings, MD, and Tyler Wolfe and wife Jackie, who are stationed in San Diego, CA with the U.S. Navy; and her great-granddaughter, Josephine Wolfe.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Patrick Buhrman officiating.

Interment will follow at Frostburg Memorial Park in Frostburg, MD.

Clarence “Bud” Samuel Hagelin, Jr., 86, of Cresaptown-Bel Air, MD went to be with the Lord and peacefully passed surrounded by his family on September 30, 2025 at the Frostburg Rehab Center.

He was born July 16, 1939 in Frederick, MD to the late Clarence Sr. and Mabel Hagelin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Hagelin; and a brother, John Hagelin.
Bud graduated from Walkersville High School in 1957. Then served his country with the U.S. Army in the Military Police and Special Intelligence. Following he served his community of Thurmont, MD as the Chief of Police, and was especially proud of assisting the Secret Service while Presidents visited Camp David and Harriet Chapel Church, including sitting next to Pres. Johnson and the first lady at church. Also in Thurmont he owned and operated the Red Door Sub Shop. Bud then started a new career as a liquor and wine salesman for Churchill Distributors, covering Allegany and Garrett Counties, MD until his retirement.

Bud loved his time as Chief of Police, a lifetime of fast pitch softball, antiquing, the Baltimore Orioles, and watching westerns. He was a past president of The Lions Club of Thurmont, MD and a member of LaVale, MD.

Surviving is his wife of 36 years Debi Hagelin; sons, Neil Hagelin and wife Susan, Eric Hagelin and wife Catherine, and B.J. Curtis and wife Vy; six grandchildren, Heather Hassett (Trent), Julie Santos (Chris), Jon Erik Hagelin, Nathan Hagelin (Nicole), Ryan Hagelin, and Emily Hagelin; eleven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Geraldene Stitley, Delores Campbell, Lorraine Kuhn, and Lois Small (Gene); and his large extended family including numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to nurses and staff of UPMC Western Maryland and Frostburg Rehab Center.

Cumberland—Jack H. Vanetta, 67, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at UPMC Western Maryland.
Born in Cumberland, MD, on August 23, 1952, he was the son of the late John and Thelma (Burgess) Carroll Vanetta. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Vanetta; half- brothers, William Carroll, Jr., and John Carroll.

Jack was employed at the Higson Farm where he had worked for many years. Recently, he enjoyed attending the Covenant House Day Care Center and participating in their activities.

Jack is survived by his sister, Thelma Dean Emerick. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jack will be cremated. Because of health care concerns, there will be no immediate services, but a memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the members of Higson family for their constant concern for Jack’s wellbeing. Their friendship to Jack brought him much happiness and made him feel like a member of their family. The family is also grateful to the staff of the Cumberland Health Center and UMPC Western Maryland for the kind, considerate care they had given Jack during his illness.
