Join us to learn more about PFOs, PFO closures, and PFO recovery. David is a physical therapist who had his PFO closed. He's a PFO awareness advocate and he has written a book on the subject. Stop by and participate in an informative discussion.

David Dansereau is an accomplished physical therapist, certified aging in place and age tech specialist, digital health innovator, and the founder of SmartMovesPT. With over 30 years of clinical experience, his professional background spans clinical care, corporate health, and digital rehabilitation strategy. As a former registered dietitian and sports nutritionist, David has dedicated his career to integrating movement science, health technology, and patient empowerment.

David brings a deeply personal perspective to his writing as a stroke survivor himself. He is a dedicated advocate for the stroke community, serving as a past patient co-founder of the former survivor support communities at the PFO Research Foundation and EnableUs as well as current co-host of the Know Stroke Podcast. Additionally, he previously served as a national stroke patient spokesperson for the American Heart Association and Stroke Association, volunteers with Tedy's Team, and serves as a patient stakeholder for stroke research at organizations including the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), Massachusetts General Hospital, and the SAYA Consortium at Tufts Medical Center. David was recently honored by the Abbott HeartMates program and drafted into their 2026 class for his volunteer work with their heart support community alongside Tedy Bruschi and Damar Hamlin, the team's ambassadors and captains.

David has written articles for the National Stroke Association's Stroke Smart Magazine as well as for Advance for Physical Therapists. His story of stroke recovery and awareness has also been featured in the New York Times, on Fox/ABC News, as well as in PT Products Online magazine. He has also testified before the FDA to provide advocacy for the patient voice for stroke recovery and survivorship. An established author of the Amazon best-seller Body in Balance, David continues his mission to improve care delivery and provide resources for recovery with his new book, Closure After Stroke.

The 100 billion dollar rehab question is, how does someone who has had a fall and has lost mobility confidence believe in their balance again?
With a fall comes the paralyzing fear of another and with it the loss of mobility, strength, energy, and independence.

The list goes on, that’s the bad news and usually where the downward health spiral begins and illness and aging complications win.

But there is some good news, you can prevent this downward spiral. Join me on my next balance workshop to learn how!

On episode 78 Co-Host David Dansereau is running solo without his broadcasting partner Mike Garrow, who is in LA to attend the 2025 International Stroke Conference

On this first episode of 2025, David gives a quick update to why he hasn’t been behind the microphone for a bit on the show, and also covers his own ‘magic wand’ answer to our somewhat famous question we’ve asked every guest on our show.
David also reveals the origin story behind the magic wand question, how it's tied to research initiated while at the International Stroke Conference (ISC), his current book project (Closure After Stroke), and what all the knowledge gained from these answers reveals about changes needed to the stroke care pathway.

Here are some of the common themes around changes needed in stroke care (see linked post for details):

Enhanced Public Education and Awareness
Streamlined Emergency Response Systems
Comprehensive Post-Stroke Rehabilitation
Equitable Access to Care
Advancements in Research and Technology
Patient and Care Partner Access and Voice
