If you want to avoid unwanted chemicals and genetically modified ingredients in your food, you have to understand the labels, and know what questions to ask.
Not all labels mean the same thing, and each one tells you something different about what may or may not be in your food.
USDA Organic: Prohibits GMOs, sewage sludge, and most synthetic pesticides and herbicides.
Glyphosate Residue Free: Means the product has been tested for glyphosate and meets the certification standard for very low or non-detectable residue.
Non-GMO Project Verified: Means the product meets standards for avoiding genetically modified ingredients—but it does not automatically mean organic or pesticide-free.
We’ll have Clean Food Shopping Guides available in the coming weeks to help you learn how to shop for clean food, whether that’s at the grocery store, farmers market, or directly from local farmers.
