Migraine is often thought of as "just a headache," but for many people, it's much more than that.

Research shows that migraine and autonomic dysfunction frequently overlap, meaning symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, rapid heart rate, heat intolerance, and even fainting can occur alongside—or sometimes even separate from—head pain.

Because the autonomic nervous system helps regulate many automatic functions throughout the body, migraine can affect multiple systems, making symptoms feel unpredictable and sometimes difficult to connect.

Understanding this overlap can help patients have more informed conversations with their healthcare providers and better recognize patterns in their symptoms.

Did you know your calf muscles act like a "second heart"? Every time they contract, they squeeze the veins in your legs to push blood back up to your heart, helping to maintain your blood pressure and brain blood flow when you're standing.

In a healthy body, your calves work hand-in-hand with your autonomic nervous system to prevent blood from pooling in your legs. But with autonomic dysfunction, this process falters. Blood pools in the lower extremities, cardiac output drops, and less blood reaches the brain, leading to common symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, brain fog, fatigue, weakness, and even fainting.

That is why activating your calf muscles is such a powerful, yet overlooked, treatment strategy. It plays a major role in regulating your blood pressure while standing, even more than it helps with your balance.

Next time you are standing, try actively pumping your feet or contracting your calves to give your circulation an easier lift!

When we stand up, gravity naturally pulls blood downward into the lower body. Normally, the autonomic nervous system quickly responds by tightening blood vessels and helping maintain circulation to the brain and upper body.

In POTS, that regulation may not happen efficiently.

Blood tends to pool more in the:
• legs
• abdomen
• lower extremities

This can reduce the amount of blood returning upward to the heart and brain.
The heart then compensates by beating faster.

As a result, people may experience symptoms such as:
• dizziness
• brain fog
• blurred vision
• fatigue
• shakiness
• feeling faint
• “heavy” legs
• exercise intolerance

POTS involves real time dysfunction and symptoms within the autonomic nervous system.

Ever wonder why the heat hits you harder than everyone else? It might be more than just dehydration; it could be your nervous system.

Your autonomic nervous system manages vital functions like temperature control, heart rate, and blood vessel regulation. When you overheat, your body must work overtime to stay balanced. For those with autonomic dysfunction, this extra stress can lead to:

• Dizziness and fatigue
• Rapid heart rate
• Brain fog
• Nausea and shakiness
• Exercise intolerance

If your body struggles to keep its cool, your nervous system might be playing a bigger role than you realize.

Ever feel like you did everything right but still woke up feeling worse?

For many people living with autonomic dysfunction, symptoms aren't always caused by one obvious trigger. Instead, they can build gradually as different stressors accumulate throughout the day, or even over several days. Poor sleep, dehydration, illness, heat, hormonal changes, and physical or emotional stress can all add to the body's overall load.

When that threshold is reached, symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, nausea, or a racing heart may become more noticeable.

Understanding your own patterns can be an important step in recognizing what may contribute to symptom flares. While everyone's experience is different, learning how the nervous system responds to cumulative stress can help make those "good day, bad day" shifts feel a little less confusing.

Let's talk about how the nervous system and anxiety are linked. We have what we call explained and unexplained anxiety.

Explained anxiety is truly just being anxious about what is happening within your own personal life, what is happening around you in the world, or what is happening in your body.

On the other hand, unexplained anxiety is when you might be relaxing and doing nothing, or especially in the middle of the night, and you randomly feel nervous, experience tachycardia, which is an increase in heart rate, or feel a little bit faint. This can be more indicative of having an adrenaline dump, which has more to do with the autonomic nervous system.

When we talk about this adrenaline surge, it can happen just as a result of the condition itself. But most commonly, we also see that these adrenaline surges can happen from two other factors: the first one has to do with histamine, and the second one has to do with your blood sugar.

Autonomic dysfunction does not always look like “just dizziness or heart rate issues.”
Since the autonomic nervous system helps regulate automatic body functions, dysregulation can affect multiple systems throughout the body.

Symptoms people are often surprised that their symptoms can be connected to autonomic dysfunction including things like heat intolerance, adrenaline surges, internal shakiness, nausea, coat hanger pain, brain fog, air hunger, exercise intolerance, GI symptoms, frequent urination, internal vibrations, sensory overwhelm, fatigue after standing, and just feeling "wired but tired."

Many people feel their symptoms seem random, inconsistent, or unrelated. The symptoms can be hard to track and layered upon each other.

The autonomic nervous system influences far more functions in the body than most people realize.

Ever wonder why one day you feel great and the next day everything falls apart? It’s likely your "trigger threshold."

Dysautonomia symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and migraines often flare up when multiple stressors stack on top of each other. It’s rarely just one thing; it’s a "perfect storm" of factors such as:

• Poor sleep
• Extra stress
• Conflict with loved ones
• Dehydration
• Overexertion

When these factors hit your limit, your nervous system can no longer adapt or regulate, leading to a crash. Understanding these weaknesses and rehabbing the nervous system is key to helping your body self-regulate and manage these flares.

Did you know? Autonomic Dysregulation is NOT one-size-fits-all.

Symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, rapid heart rate, or fainting can have many different causes – and conditions that affect the autonomic nervous system are often misunderstood because they share many of the same symptoms.

Hippus: This is a condition where the pupils (the black part of the eye) pulse in and out. It indicates that the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are constantly switching on and off, signaling a disregulated nervous system.

Forgetting to Breathe: Because the autonomic nervous system controls breathing, it should happen automatically without conscious focus. Holding your breath or finding it difficult to breathe while simultaneously performing a task is a sign of disruption.

Heart Rate Fluctuations: While a normal resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100, individuals have their own typical baseline. A significant jump in your resting heart rate while relaxed (for example, from a typical 70 up to 90 while sitting and watching television) indicates that the nervous system is disregulated.
