When do I actually recommend an X-ray or MRI as a sports chiropractor? 🚨
More imaging doesn’t always mean better healthcare.
I don’t routinely recommend X-rays to track progress during chiropractic treatment.
Why?
Because changes on an image don’t always correlate with pain, function, or how well someone is recovering.
In some cases, imaging can actually create more fear and confusion than clarity. ❌
But there are situations where imaging or further medical evaluation is absolutely necessary. 👇
1️⃣ Significant trauma: Car accidents, major sports collisions, falls, or other injuries where a fracture or structural injury is suspected.
2️⃣ Progressive neurological symptoms: Tingling that turns into numbness. Numbness that progresses to weakness. These are changes we NEVER want to ignore.
3️⃣ Unexplained headaches with concerning symptoms: Especially when accompanied by dizziness, vertigo, neurological changes, or significant blood pressure abnormalities. These symptoms may require urgent medical evaluation.
I’m not against imaging. I’m against ordering imaging without a clear clinical reason.
The goal isn’t to find something wrong on a picture. It’s to figure out what’s causing your symptoms and determine the safest, most effective way to help you recover.
