I love the juxtaposition in this picture. Four of my nieces and nephews have a band, The New Pilgrims , and they’re dressing in Colonial costumes to play old-time and patriotic music in the Stow, Ohio, 4th of July parade tomorrow. They’ve also recently upgraded their sound gear, including microphones from Shure. Next up, I’ll be teaching them about healthy hearing and hearing loss prevention.

While most musicians in 1776 didn’t have to think about music-induced hearing loss and related disorders, today’s music industry professionals certainly do.

I’m grateful to be part of forward-thinking efforts like the Healthy Ears Limited Annoyance (HELA) Initiative, which helps educate the music industry on preserving hearing for both workers and audiences. I’m honored that I got to work on this manuscript with Marc Fagelson, Mitra Britton, and Alexis Warner. For the past 14 years, I’ve dedicated a large portion of my life to advancing specialized care for music industry professionals and building stronger bridges in research and clinical practice.

This is work that matters because music professionals face hearing disorders and risks that affect them differently than workers in other fields, and they deserve care that truly reflects their reality.

In this study of 1,138 music professionals, tinnitus stood out as the most common concern, reported by nearly 70% of participants, along with sound sensitivity, speech-in-noise difficulty, and limited hearing protection use.

These numbers reinforce the importance of music audiology: the need is real, the gap is real, and access to proper care remains too limited. That’s why the partnership between Tuned and MusiCares means so much to me. It helps bring specialized providers, teleaudiology, and meaningful support closer to the ears that need it most.

I’m thrilled to introduce all of you to John, my third child, who was born January 18th. He is the sweetest little guy and is truly loved, especially by his brother and sister! I will resume clinical work in April and I look forward to seeing all of you. Thanks for your patience and love as Scott and I grow our family! ❤️
