When people hear the phrase opposite to emotion (often called opposite action in therapy), they sometimes think it means pretending you don’t have feelings or forcing yourself to be happy. That’s not what it means at all.
Opposite action means asking yourself one important question: Is this emotion based on the facts, or is it making the situation seem more dangerous than it really is?
Think of your emotions like a smoke alarm. Most of the time, a smoke alarm is helpful because it warns you when there’s a real fire. But sometimes it goes off because someone burned toast. The alarm is real—it really is making noise—but that doesn’t mean your house is actually on fire.
Your emotions work the same way. They always tell you something, but they aren’t always giving you accurate instructions about what you should do next.
