If you are ever in a situation where you have no choice but to fight back, your mindset matters far more than your physical technique.

In the middle of a real-world threat, you simply will not have the time to think through complicated movements or formal techniques. Research on resistance during attacks reveals a consistent truth: people who choose to fight back are significantly more likely to get away than those who freeze. Interestingly, most individuals who successfully fight back have absolutely no formal training.

The True Key to Survival

Make the Decision Now: What actually gets you through an attack isn't perfect technique; it is the decision you make before the incident ever happens, the firm decision that you will not become a victim.

Train Your Mind First: If you train your mind, your body will naturally follow.

Mental Preparation Equals Physical Preparation: Your mindset matters just as much as your physical capabilities.

Do not wait for a dangerous situation to find you before you decide how you will react. Make the mental commitment to yourself today.

The Most Important Back-to-School Conversation

We spend hours preparing for the school year, buying supplies, organizing schedules, and talking about grades. But on average, 1 in 5 kids say they don't feel safe going to school. Are we having the most important conversation of all?

Many children lack a plan for what to do if they feel unsafe. This year, make time for this conversation:

Ask Direct Questions: Don't just ask, "How was school?" Ask, "Is there anything or anywhere at school where you don't feel safe? Is there someone who makes you feel unsafe?"

Tell Them to Speak Up: Let them know that telling you they are uncomfortable is not overreacting. It is better for you to know what is happening so you can be prepared.

Promise to Believe Them: Tell them that if they come to you, you will believe them and you will take action every single time.

Kids cannot act if they don't have a plan that has been spoken out loud to them. Set clear boundaries and let them know what is okay for them to do before they ever need to do it.

Here's to a safe and great school year.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to train the team at Houston Methodist Surgical Center, giving them the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves through practical self defense training.

Silverback Self Defense helps people recognize potential threats, avoid dangerous situations, de-escalate when possible, and respond with confidence when action is necessary.

The goal isn’t simply knowing a few physical techniques. It’s being better prepared to recognize risk, make good decisions, and know what to do when your safety is at risk.

Thank you to the Houston Methodist Surgical Center team for making safety and preparedness a priority.

Want to bring this type of training to your organization? We work with corporate teams, healthcare organizations, schools, nonprofits, and community groups to customize training for real life situations.

Self Defense Isn't About Fighting

One of the biggest misconceptions about self defense is that it is all about fighting. If you walk away from this video understanding just one thing, I want it to be this: that is the opposite of what we teach.

Our approach is built around four stages:

Awareness: Recognizing a problem early before it boils over.

Avoidance: Walking away or changing your path to avoid danger.

De-escalation: Diffusing a confrontation and giving the person an exit.

Action: The absolute last resort.

Action is never the first choice. You only take action when there is no safe option left and someone else has taken your choices away from you. The goal is never to teach you how to fight, outlast, or overpower someone. The only goal is to create the opportunity to escape and get home safe.

Getting home safely is the win.

This month, we will be unpacking the mindset behind self defense. Follow along to build your confidence, train your judgment, and learn how to protect yourself.

Three things your child needs to know before they walk into school:

Who are the trusted adults on campus? Make sure they know the names of the adults they can go to if they feel unsafe or need help.

Establish a code word. Give them a simple phrase that means “come get me, no questions asked.” This gives them a safe way out of any uncomfortable situation.

Telling you about something scary is not tattling. It is safe to tell you. Adults do not ask kids to keep secrets.

Most children do not lack safety skills; they lack clear boundaries and a script for when to use them.

Spend 10 minutes tonight having this conversation. It will matter more than most of the other things you do to prepare them for the new school year.

When it comes to personal safety, the most dangerous mistake you can make is assuming that a bad situation will never happen to you.

When you operate with this mindset, you unconsciously stop paying attention. You start walking to your car with your head down, you scroll through your phone in parking lots, you keep your earbuds in, and you let yourself be completely distracted in public spaces.

Situational awareness is your first, and often your best, line of defense.

The Safety Formula:

Awareness Buys Time: The earlier you recognize a potential threat, the more time you have to react.

Time Gives You Choices: With more time, you can make smarter decisions on how to safely navigate or avoid the situation altogether.

Stop relying on the hope that nothing bad will happen. Take control of your safety by staying alert and engaged with your surroundings.

September is Real Estate Safety Month, a good time to make sure your agents have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves when they’re working in the field.

Real estate professionals regularly meet unfamiliar clients, work alone, host open houses, enter vacant properties, and find themselves in situations where recognizing a potential threat early can make all the difference.

We still have a few September dates available, and it’s not too late to host a Real Estate Safety Seminar for your agents.

These seminars are a great fit for:

• Brokerages looking to provide practical safety training for their agents
• Title companies, lenders, and other real estate partners looking for a great client event
• Organizations wanting to bring multiple partners together for a sponsored event

They’re also easily sponsorable. Several industry partners can come together and share the cost, making it an affordable way to provide agents with practical training while giving sponsors an opportunity to connect with the real estate community.

You bring your agents together. We’ll provide the training that helps them walk away more confident, more aware, and better prepared to protect themselves.

If you’d like to get a Real Estate Safety Month event on the calendar, reach out soon to secure one of our remaining September dates.

Always Trust Your Instincts

If a person, a location, or a situation feels off to you, do not ignore that feeling. True situational awareness requires you to listen to your intuition.

You do not owe anyone a conversation, an explanation, or a chance if something feels weird.

Your First Line of Defense:

Leave the situation: Remove yourself from the environment.

Create distance: Distance is one of the smartest and most effective decisions you can make to stay safe.

There is a very real reason why you feel that something is off before an incident even happens. Pay close attention to your gut, trust your intuition, and stay safe out there.

You cannot control everyone around you, but you can absolutely control how you move in public.

In this video, we break down five proven ways to become a harder target and prioritize your personal safety:

Walk with confidence: Always move with confidence and a purpose.

Stay off your phone: Keep your eyes up and eliminate visual distractions.

Keep one ear open: If you are wearing earbuds, leave one ear open so you can still hear your surroundings.

Trust your instincts: Pay close attention if a person or a place feels off to you.

Know your exits: Always know where your exits are located so you know exactly where to go if you have to escape.

By practicing these simple, everyday habits, you can ensure you are not chosen as an easy target for crime. Stay safe out there.
