Money Reveals the Heart
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21
Primary Text: Matthew 6:19–24
Big Idea: Money is a spiritual diagnostic. It reveals what the heart treasures, trusts, fears, and serves.
Purpose: Invite hearers to examine their financial habits without condemnation and reorder their love around God’s kingdom.
Introduction — The Receipt Test
Hold up or describe a receipt. It appears to record purchases, but over time receipts tell a deeper story: what we prioritize, what comforts us, what frightens us, and what we love.
Transition: Jesus does not begin with a budget spreadsheet. He begins with treasure, because treasure always reaches the heart.
I. Treasure Directs the Heart (Matthew 6:19–21)
Earthly treasure is temporary: moths, rust, and thieves expose its fragility.
Heavenly treasure is secure because it is invested in what God values.
The heart follows treasure. Repeated investment deepens affection.
Preaching question: If someone studied our financial patterns, where would they conclude our hearts are going?
Application: Name one spending or saving pattern that may be discipling your desires.
II. Money Can Distort Spiritual Vision (Matthew 6:22–23)
Jesus connects the eye with the inner life; what we fix our attention on shapes what fills us.
Comparison, scarcity, and consumption can darken our ability to see God’s provision.
Generosity trains the heart to see abundance as a gift to share.
Illustration: A receipt is a spiritual mirror—not a final judgment, but an honest reflection.
Application: Review recent spending prayerfully. Look for patterns of fear, comfort, status, compassion, and worship.
III. The Heart Cannot Serve Two Masters (Matthew 6:24)
Money is a useful servant but a cruel master.
Divided allegiance eventually demands a choice.
Freedom begins when God, not money, becomes the source of identity and security.
Gospel connection: Jesus gave Himself for us. Grace—not guilt—frees us to hold possessions loosely and love generously.
Application: Practice one concrete act of surrender: give, release, plan, or trust.

Conclusion — Let God Reorder the Heart
The question is not simply, “How much money do I have?” The deeper question is, “What has my heart?” God does not ask us to deny every need or feel guilty for every purchase. He invites us to live with undivided love, faithful stewardship, and open hands.
Response Invitation
Search me: Ask God to reveal where money has captured affection.
Surrender: Name one fear, habit, or desire to release.
Reorder: Redirect one financial choice toward a kingdom priority.
Practice: Take one step of generosity this week.
Closing Prayer
Father, search our hearts. Show us where money has captured our affection, where fear has narrowed our faith, and where comfort has replaced trust. Teach us to treasure You above all earthly things. Make us wise stewards, joyful givers, and faithful servants. In Jesus’ name, amen.
