💊 Tuesday Tip with Dana: Are Supplements Safe?

“Natural” doesn’t always mean “safe.”

Vitamins, herbs, and dietary supplements can be beneficial but they can also interact with prescription medications or certain health conditions.

Before starting a new supplement, keep these things in mind:

✅ Tell your pharmacist and healthcare provider about all vitamins, herbs, and supplements you take.

✅ Some supplements may increase your risk of bleeding, especially before surgery or dental procedures.

✅ Certain supplements can affect blood sugar or blood pressure, particularly when taken with prescription medications.

✅ Supplements may not be appropriate if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or multiple chronic health conditions.

✅ Some supplements can interfere with how your prescription medications are absorbed or work in your body.

✅ Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects or interactions with some supplements and medications.

💊 MONDAY MEDICATION MYTH | LAKE MARTIN PHARMACY

❌ MYTH: “If a pill is hard to swallow, it’s okay to crush it.”

✅ FACT: Not always!

Some medications are specially designed to release slowly, dissolve in a certain part of the digestive system, or protect the medication until it reaches the right place. Crushing, chewing, or splitting these medications can change how they work and in some cases, could cause too much medication to be released at once.

💡 Having trouble swallowing a medication?
Don’t just crush it! Ask your pharmacist first. There may be a liquid, smaller tablet, or another option available.

When in doubt, ask your Lake Martin Pharmacy team before you crush, split, or chew. 💙
