Hashimoto's patients get told a lot of things. Here's what the clinical evaluation actually looks like. π
Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the U.S. β and it's also one of the most misunderstood. When a patient comes in, here's what Dr. Leffert actually looks for:
πΉ Physical exam β an enlarged thyroid gland, typically diffuse rather than nodular
πΉ Blood tests β elevated TSH and low T4 confirm hypothyroidism
πΉ TPO antibodies β a marker that confirms Hashimoto's as the cause
One important distinction: TPO antibodies are a marker of the disease. They are not the cause. Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition where the body inflames the thyroid for reasons we don't fully understand β and that changes how we think about treatment.
More on that in the next clip.
