I shared my traumatic experiences on high profile global platform that has a legacy rooted deeply in the African American community.

The crazy thing about being a trauma therapist is that you are fluent in all the tools and resources but you aren't exempt from the feels. While I feel honored to share my story...even vindicated, I felt the impact deeply.

The article went live that morning. I was checked out (dissociative) the rest of the day and completely unavailable the next day.

The more we speak out about the injustices we experience that might otherwise not see the light of day, the more accountability is demanded. I didn't share my story just to be featured in . I did it because I can't STOMACH lying down in silence anymore.
...I did send my therapist this message the day it was published though 😂

Scream to the mountain tops, but be sure to take care of yourself when the reverberation becomes deafening.

Clinical expertise is not a shield against a broken system.

Rounding out Black Maternal Health Week, I am honored to be featured in sharing a part of my story that unfortunately isn't unique at all. Even as a trauma psychotherapist specializing in perinatal mental health at that time, I was not immune to the medical gaslighting and systemic neglect that disproportionately affects Black mothers.

Grief will spin the block and sucker punch you. My granny was really sick for a long time. Toward the end of her life she told me a lot about her lifetime...horrible, heavy things. She wanted me to write a book...we didn't have enough time. One of the saddest things she told me, fighting back tears was that God gave her her voice...that it was her gift, and she lost it. I told her (in retrospect, in COMPLETE denial) noooo granny. He gave it to you, that's for YOU. You'll get it back..I mean, obviously... she was the stongest woman I've ever known.

She got it back...

So now I'm sharing one of the only videos I have left of that voice. I cherish it and the whole experience of getting to love and be loved by her. Her prayers are still keeping me.
