I’ve got a little cold right now. I was bored today from prolonged convalescence, and decided to harvest and hang some herbs to dry. This is Catnip (left) and Pennyroyal (right.) The catnip is for my kitties (also for luck) and the pennyroyal was once traditionally hung in sick rooms to promote recovery. I drew this goddess card from the Divine Feminine deck for a friend the other night. Quan Yin {kwan-yin} is a multifaceted bodhisattva of compassion in Buddhist tradition. Her name literally means “she who hears the cries of the world.” ..
We talk a lot about fostering empathy in the new age world, and thanks to Brené Brown and other modern day prophets, it’s become a buzzword even in corporate culture. While we should celebrate this newfound understanding that the traditionally feminine trait of empathy is now valued, the conversation frequently omits the element of compassion. ..
Empathy is when you *feel* with others. Compassion is when you *act* upon that empathy to soothe suffering around you. Empathy is essential, yes, but it means nothing if you do not act upon it. Many of us feel the suffering of others, but we don’t commit ourselves to easing it. Or we become codependent and ease others suffering at the expense of our own well-being, and then become resentful. We have to practice self-compassion before we can truly be compassionate to others...
A good way to honor her is to do one nice thing to ease someone’s suffering and tell no one else about it. ..
